Thumbscrews

Bit reluctant to bother John at the moment.

Does anybody know the approximate price of replacement thumbscews and, because I'm a bit of a klutz in these matters, how to replace them - there is something bigger than the threaded hole at both ends!!

Alternatively, what is the thread - please not Whitworth!

Hello Simon - thread is Whitworth 7/16" or 1/2" I can't remember offhand, and I'm not near my Seagulls - what's wrong with good old Whit? UNC is virtually the same - is the same pitch, but probably a different thread angle.
Excellent new replica screws, complete with cups and cup fixing screws are available via John of this site.

To remove the old ones, knock of the cupped washers if they are still on. but if the screws are badly distorted or bashed up near the washer end, it is kinder to the female threaded part to saw the screws off near a straight part and then wind the remaining portion out.

If you need to clean the female thread up, Whitworth taps are freely available from specialist suppliers - I should be able to give you a couple of addresses if you are stuck. Rick

Thanks for the reply. I will go for one of the replicas.

Nothing wrong with whitworth apart from availability. It is a strange thing about central London that it is easy to buy all manner of fashion items but very difficult to find mechanical things. I'm sure that there are hundreds of suppliers around the north circular but finding them is a nightmare. A twenty mile round trip can take hours!

Hello again Simon - you probably don't need anything at the moment, but I get Whitworth and BSF (the other size used on Seagulls) nuts & bolts etc in Stainless steel or chrome from Custom Fasteners in Newtown, Powys, who do virtually a next-day postal delivery service, and also sell Whit and BSF taps and dies.
I don't have their contact details with me, but they do have have a website: customfasteners - with the twiddly bits at either end (think they are a co.uk adress)
Can imagine the frustrations of driving/parking in London - bad enough in the fens! Rick

Seagul thumbscrews are £15.00 plus, I do have some nice S/S ones to pattern, beter made and stronger for £13.00, drop me a mail!
