Is the Little Forty physically smaller than the 40 minus?

the "little model 40" is definitely one on its own in the 40 series of engines. the later 40minus is slightly larger capacity.

little model 40 = 55cc (thereabouts)
later model 40minus =64cc same as the bigger brother 40plus. (same powerhead)
the "little model 40" covers a few different motors in the range starting with the original model F (1949/53) which were 40cc thereabouts but are very rare and not many are known to survive. the next in the series of little 40's (and possibly easier to source) is the FV models (55cc ish?)
nice little engines, i like them a lot and are very easy to handle on the back of the boat.

40 + seems to be the norm over here (and in the US which we do not belong to...lol)

I wonder how many Little Forties made it this way.

I have a pristine 1977 Silver Century Plus long long shaft .

But looking for a little fellow for my AVON.

I'll search for Gannet
