Saving Old Seagulls

I’ve eventually found a photo of a Marston with the rudder fitted, nearly every Marston has the provision to have one fitted but I’m yet to see one in the flesh.

That one is not fitted Rene.

Above the rudder you will see two little arms these are the limit arms which also hold the hinge pin which fits in the lower pintle.

I think he's just holding it there.

And it’s no problem to use the photo, I took it from a 1934 magazine.

I wonder where they were planning on locating the top rudder mount on the majority of Marstons that had no pintles.

It’s funny that it seems none of the 78cc motors were fitted with rudder mounts but all the 102cc models from 1935 to 1936 had the fittings for a rudder but then with the ON/OP the top mount vanished, surely for those two years the rudders must have been manufactured and supplied.... or not

I stand corrected, I found this advert stating the rudder can be fitted to the 78cc models as it comes with “fixing lugs”.

How the top mount attaches, I would love to know.

Didn’t the OP/ON have the top rudder fitting that was a clamp around the exhaust?

No, not as standard, only the OJ in the straight exhaust 102cc Marstons.

The OJ and the OP did have some differences, the OJ had the top rudder pintle, the OP/ON had none, a top feed carb, ON/OP bottom feed, a gearbox with a single nipple on the starboard side, the OP/ON had two, a fuel tank similar to the OA with the mounts welded on but the rests on the tank are studs like the OP, the OA had smaller studs with groves to fit rubber rests, the ON/OP had a similar tank to the SD but with a central filler and a one piece cast ally mount, still held on with jubilee clips and finally the base of the exhaust tube was a different shape/fit.

I really like the OJ, the first straight leg seagull and that basic design lasted nearly sixty years.
