Size matters

Post by cookie1 »

I'm doing a tentative restoration on a little forty amongst other projects . I'm a bit concerned about the tiller length , I feel it is rather short at 5" . Once it's complete it might be out in public with other little forties and I don't want it feeling inadequate ! Can anyone reassure me on the correct length ? Also , should it have a Dover grip ? Cheers

I'm constantly reminded that 5" is to short (and that's 15stone pushing it in) joking aside I use an extension with another throttle fitted so that I have 2 options if I'm out on my own then I can sit further up the boat or if doubled up i can sit right at back but Jeremy is the main man for original dimensions and grips

If you have a look at Jeremy's data sheets/key for the register on the main site pages, you will find tiller lengths in the tiller column if I remember right.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

There are a few references to 5" stub tillers in previous posts. Here is one:

Tillers
The early F and the FVs were initially fitted with 5" stub tillers. I suspect - only suspect - that these were probably not painted.
