TD67391L

Post by andrew »

Found this one at an antique marine motor expo over the weekend. Was mostly steam engines, very old inboards and a collection of US outboards, all very fun to see and lots of them were running. This TD was lying on the ground behind a rack of restored motors, and owner was more than happy to part with it for a very reasonable price. So I bought it without really looking at it :)

Took a very quick look when I got home and can see the following few issues which need to be corrected. Not going for a cosmetic restore, just want to get it running well again.

1. Piston is stiff at bottom of stroke. Will crack it open and inspect (including waterways).
2. Looks like a 40 prop. Any thoughts on appropriate prop for TD series?
3. Something not right where exhaust tube meets gearbox, see the red (water?) tube in the way. Is the bottom end correct at all? Or perhaps the exhaust tube is wrong? Perhaps this motor is a bitsa
4. Needs new water hose between block and exhaust, rubber replacement has seen better days.

And finally, I noticed an ‘SD’ stamp on the top crank housing under the flywheel. Is this typical for the TD series?

Won’t get to this one for a while, but wanted to get comments now so that I can refer back to this thread later on when needed. Thanks!

There should be some letters cast on the hub of your prop, what are they.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Wouldn't you know it, the prop says 102 on it. I looked before but it was painted over so not obvious.

Any thoughts on what's happening where the exhaust tube meets water pump housing? I don't have my other 102 handy to compare to, but something looks amiss here.

Hi Andrew,

The question has been asked on several occasions about the SD stamped in to the upper crank case. Note sure that we have an official answer, but it is very very common. We see it a lot here (in Australia) on AD 102 Seagulls.

It has nothing to do with the Wartime SD 102.

S
