Saving Old Seagulls

Last weekend a big clearing auction in country NSW's had a few outboards in the collection, 12 sold for reasonable prices but this one had the bidders excited, selling for $780.00 including fees. When I first saw a photo of the outboards they were laying in the back of an old International and Oldsmobile Trucks unloved. So what makes this one so special, yes it looks in good nick and early I am just curious. Sorry about the photos quality took it off the Auctioneers Facebook page.

Looks like (what i term as a) phase 2 model AC or AD. Provided this one really is untouched it might still have its original cylinder with slotted core plugs (just like later gearbox drain screws). Bow tie prop fits in with this era too.
They are quite a nice old thing, especially as this one has its original decal on the tank, but do we think its really THAT valuable? Well, we've seen a lot of these seagulls rice in value over the years.
I really like them but wouldn't pay over the odds for one. Still a nice looking outboard though

It was the best looking of the Seagulls and it only takes a couple of keen bidders to push the price up, lovely tank.

I can tell you a little bit about this one, as I had a friend there who spoke with the old fellow that bought it.

He was in fact wanting some parts from it only and had set himself a limit of $300 (over the top anyway) but got caught up in it all and continued bidding until the hammer went down at $650.

True story.

I do have the gentleman's number and will be calling him in the next couple of days re some other matter.

Thanks Spiro, thought that might have happened we have probably all done that at some time first shock would have been when the hammer dropped then the second when he went to pay for the motor plus commission. Would have liked one of the Jets, thought they were a fair price.

Hey John, as said earlier, I had friends there including one bidding on my behalf. I was interested in both the ATCO Boatimpeller and the SIMPLEX.

The hammer wend down on the ATCO at $200, plus on costs of course. They often appear on eBay and Gumtree for between $100 and $150 so I passed.

The SIMPLEX sold for $125 plus on costs, which wouldn't be too bad if it was complete. It was however missing the fuel tank which is rare and difficult to find, even in the mower world.

Some of the other outboards, including the VICTA-JET sold at reasonable prices.

The clearing sale at Bathurst a couple years back was much better, with some super rare outboards selling for as little as $50.

Better luck next time, think I will stick with the Seagulls and a few inboards I have but it is interesting watching what turns up. Will never finish half the projects I have waiting.
