super forty plus!
Re: Little Forty ?
Any advance on Super Forty Plus
Re: Little Forty ?
That then evolved into the forty minus, and forty plus, odd when you consider they were not the original 40cc
Re: Little Forty ?
Hi John,
Well done on acquiring another engine from the Early Forty Series. I have added it to the register.
I would be interested what tank is fitted (ie has it the 7/16 or the 3/4 corner rads) and whether the choke flap has a air hole in the middle and also whether the carb bowl has a drain hole near the top. Has it got the black plastic fuel pipe? Sorry for these questions, but it can all add to our knowledge.
I am not very good ar remembering their model names as designated by the sales side of BS. Super Forty Plus, as Adrian suggests sound right.
The letter prefixes on the other hand are, I believe, very descriptive in respect of the steady development of these engines. I have proposed previously that LS stood for Long(er) Stroke, which is the fundamental design difference to the FVP (Forty Villiers Plus).
As has been mentioned the next development were the SJM/SJP models. The fundamental desigh change over the LS was that the cooling water was sealed from the aluminium crankcase by the design of the water jacket. I have proposed that the SJM/SJP prefix stood for Sealed Jacket Minus/Plus.

Re: Little Forty ?
Thank you John for the photos.
It looks a nice complete correct LS.
I think the tank is the later c7/16" corner rad version.
I note that the choke flap does not have the central air hole. I am not able to see whether the float chamber has a drainage hole or not. Could you tell me?
The fuel pipe is the black plastic version.
The tiller appears to be the correct 10" long version complete with the correct grip.
These features are helping us to establish when these changes occurred.

This would tend to make Oysters statement 100 % accurate!
Thanks britishseagullparts, I've spoken to the owner of this drawing & have his permission use it.
This clearly illustrates some of the development path of the 40 series & what was fitted to this motor at the time this parts list was printed.

Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
