Saving Old Seagulls

Visiting an old mate, on with the search for a tin tank and bayonet lid and coming away with neither,in fact now I need two tanks and two caps. A very incomplete and seized SD 4205.l.3, JM 6842 ministery mark on box. The piston/flywheel moves freely 1/4” 3/8” observed through stub of missing carburettor so might be seized gearbox? A strip will tell.He has a rebuilt air cooled 6hp diesel for sale and a rebuilt British Anzani Super Five also for sale anyone interested P M me please..

I was driving into Fowey yesterday on my way back from Bodmin.

There is a guy who sells seagulls out of his garage between Bodmin and Fowey, he has been doing it for a few years.

May be worth a visit, I have never stopped as I have always had the co pilot in my ear saying "you don't need any more"

Good find Sid, Ok if I add her to the SD registry? If so can you tell me if the clutch lever is plain or scripted with "patent"? Also if the flywheel nut is brass with domed top or chamfered. Does sound more like gearbox seizure.

Spot on Allan the SD was at Arthurs workshop.

Hugo, the nut is the one with the dome on top alas the gear lever is missing..........carb, gear lever and tiller would have been used by Arthur for his repairing, only bits left he hadn’t needed yet.

Arthur is a time served motor engineer, apprenticed in 1941, along with two of my cousins and later my brother until he was old enough to join the army, after hostilities he went back to Skeltons garage here in Lostwithiel,always worked on marine engines and when retired carried on his love of rebuilding,Seagulls in particular.

Arthur’s just turned up with a long range tank that came off the SD when he got it, brass screw cap and little man transfer, obviously a replacement, very welcome until I find that correct tank.

Yes, dome nut is correct. Looks as tho mag is original too. Tank mounts would be cast. Is that a throttle cable stay on top of the barrel to keep cable away from flywheel? Nice project.

Re 4985.L3, here's some of of the missing detail for your list.

Skeg Stamp = YES
Clutch Lever Patent Inscript = NO (Ht Ad)
Interested to hear your thoughts on the clutch lever. I suspect it may have been deliberately bent by the previous owner ie to accommodate a shorter than normal clutch rod, but do not know for sure. Have we seen any others like this?

Just a thought Spiro. Measure the clutch rod agains one on a clutched post war long shaft 102. Their leg is a couple of inches shorter.

I don't have another clutched Seagull, but will measure the clutch rod and drive tube lengths and report back.
