New old project
Lifted the old boat out the back of the garden the other weekend. Built it about 14 years ago
9foot clinker style fiberglass rowing boat. Patched up the holes from an old inboard engine experiment which didnt end well.
Fitted a transem board. Made a cover for it and knocked up a trailer.
ebayed a century seagull outboard
New plug and lead. Fresh fuel. 10-1 fired straight up. Ready for the first water test this coming weekend
any advice?

Change the oil in the gearbox. (140 weight oil) remove the drain plug, drain the old oil (and water) and refill using the plug as the fill level with the engine upright. Make sure the petrol filters are clear (tank and carb)
Re: New old project
Thanks. Checked the points last night set them with a stanley knife blade. 0.5mm same with the plug. Picking up some oil on friday. Do you take the tap out of the tank to clean the filter? Cleaned the one in the banjo
Re: New old project
Oh been thinking if my LLS1392b5 engine revs to 3800 rpm and it has a 3.5-1 ratio gearbox and a 10" pitch prop. Does that mean i could possibly reach a speed of 10.28 miles per hour
3800rpm divided by 3.5ratio x 10" pitch
X 60 mins in an hour divided by inches in a mile 63360. = 10.28 mph
Well in theory

Thats not including the tide, winds and weight of the boat though.
Re: New old project
HI Liam - 0.5mm (0.020") correct for your plug and points - yes, you have to remove the petrol tap to check the gauze filter (if its there).
I think 10 + mph is a bit optimistic. speed is largely determined by hull shape/size - the potential max speed for a displacement (round hulled) boat is the square root of its length x 1.4 - answer in knots - with an engine that will achieve the max hull speed.

And don't forget prop slippage!
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Spoil sports i had my water ski's ready
Re: New old project
I can get 9.17927mph (17kph) out of my 20 footer (on a good day)
with no wind and a flat tide... it is a very different story when the tide starts to run!

Is it better to over think, than not think at all?

Re: New old project
Thats a good speed. I'll see what i can get when im out tomorow. Gives me a benchmark to aim for allthough i dont think this hull was designed for outright speed.
Re: New old project
Well it floats. Engine ran like a dream apart from the little miss hap i forgot to open the air screw on the fuel tank. So splutter splutter stop. Did about 10 miles.
5 to the pub (quick beer)
5 back.
Weather wasnt brill but a good first trip

Re: New old project
Looking good .
I would recommend you secure you motor with some rope round the drive tube, you don't what it falling to the bottom if it jumps off!
Also check the tightness of your thumbscrews every so often.

Good to know thanks. Do seagulls often try to jump ship?

Re: New old project
Depends on the boat, I suppose. Some transoms are subject to a little more vibration and/or movement than others, so I would hate you to find out you've got an engine disposal boat, the hard way!
