Paint Code?

Post by seagull101 »

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know the paint code of the dark blue used on some recoils and steel tanks, if not does anyone know a paint that can be bought on the internet that is similar to the original?

Cheers, Jacob

Take your tank to homebase they can match your paint then go to your local auto shop and buy it in spray form (sorted)

Match it up with something from Halfords or such like. Plenty of blues to choose from in there.
Not sure there is a "paint code" as such! Not like a car nowadays.

I used Halfords paint to match a mallard tank I restored a couple of years ago. In the end a ford colour was very close and did the job.

Take whatever it is you're going to re-paint into the shop and match it up side by side. Sometimes the colour on the cap might not be an exact match. Better still, if you've got a proper paint shop near you that can analyse the pigments, they might get a better match.

Jon, the nearest shop that sells more than black, whit and silver is 130 miles away!

Back in the day of Seagull, the biggest manufacturer of cars was what became BL. It's quite possible this is where Seagull paint came from.

Colour matching: the original colour you see will have darkened a bit over time.

Have a look at this - there will be a UK supplier, ask Jon about the enduring popularity of Morris Minors.

Took just a moment to find this:

These look like possibilities but there will be more. Quite a few more I should think.

Seagull bought their components from many different suppliers, brass & steel tanks were painted "blue" & then later on the steel ones were powder coated by the supplier, the blue colour was used to denote 25:1 fuel mix.
So even if Seagull did paint the tanks blue, they didn't have the ability to powder coat, so they must have had a colour description of the paint, the powder coat, the blue plastic rope sheave cover, finding that might almost impossible.

We've seen no evidence of any cellulose paint use by Seagull, their paints seems to be a one coat industrial enamel, with it's way lower cost of application & durability.

Some of the very late motors 1990 on (all silver, Seagull 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6) are the only ones that show signs of chromate primer prior to paint on aluminium parts.

Your best bet would be to take a sample into a industrial paint supplier as they will mix any colour by the litre & possibly in a suitable enamel.

Well I can't deny it seems you've done the homework. What you say is at least consonant with a suspicion that it seems awfully like the colour BMC painted all their diesel engines with.
