For everyone that thinks they know about seagulls, Yes the crank is bent, which is blindingly obvious, the other thing that is not so obvious is that the gudgeon pin has been put in upside down.
Now I have all the parts, I think, I will start the SD build.

Shouldn't SD's have capped floating pins, no circlips?
For my other models, all my pins' hollow ends face up...

Whoops!
Hollow end down or they start to fill with oil!

Re: Much appreciated Tam
I fitted it with a replacement crankshaft, so it has all the right parts inside now

Charles - that's the way I've always found them, so I've always put them back the same.
Sounds like you've found them the opposite. Also been suggested that it doesn't allow hot exhaust gases to pulse back in the hollow end. Don't know enough yet to argue either way. But I have taken apart and rebuilt over 2 dozen motors and so far have never seen the pin installed with the closed end up.
Strange.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, Mr. Bit's, I've just spoken the last production manager that worked for British Seagull, "to the best of his knowledge no Seagull ever left the factory with the open end of the gudgeon pin facing up".
Maybe it was something that happened on the warm side of all that water!

Re: Much appreciated Tam
Maybe..? all except for 1 or 2 came from your side of the pond, though..?
I'm not arguing the point, I'll defer to those who know a whole lot more. Just saying that's how I've found every one I've rebuilt.
I've also bought a couple of new pistons (Silver Century & Kingfisher) - and each of those came with the gudgeon pin in place (circlips bagged inside, though) - again with the hollow end facing the transfer side... for what it's worth.
I can also say, that so far at least, it doesn't seem to have done any of my motors any harm that I can tell.

Re: Much appreciated Tam
Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't service sheet no.3 titled PISTON REMOVAL state that the gudgeon pin is refitted with the hollow end facing upwards.(towards the transfer port)
I too have seen a LOT of gudgeon pins on the engines i've stripped with the hollow end upwards, so you're not alone mister bits.
Now, i've never understood why BS would do this, so i've ignored the instruction and fitted the pin "my way" with the hollow end DOWNWARDS so it won't fill up with oil over time. Makes a lot more sense to me with the hollow end down, maybe even a bit better through the transfer stage too as there's a lot less for the air/fuel mixture to overcome on its way from the crankcase to the combustion chamber.
Works for me anyway

Re: Much appreciated Tam
In any of the Service Manuals I have Jon there is no mention of anything about the hollow end direction! Service sheet 3.
Blue cover A4, not dated.
No mention in the dealer manual comes with a 93 price list inside.
Only mention of hollow at the top I can find is in the Clymer British Seagull service repair handbook, published L A, U S A 1975
