Sealed Gearbox Disassembly

Post by fleetingcontact »

Hi all

I'm having a spot of bother with a 3hp sealed gearbox reclaimed from a scrapper.

All was going well, got all the screws to release, top flange off ok, prop shaft removed, no play in any of the bronze bushes etc.

I had sort of expected that the brass (bronze?) components which make up the end of the drive shaft and connect to the gear pinion would just sort of release once I'd shifted the screw that retains them to the vertical part of the gearbox body. But no.

So apart from the small matter of detaching the drive shaft from the bevel pinion drive sleeve (which will be accomplished with a vice and a B.F.H), I have no real plan on how to detach the pinion gear from the rest of it.

Has anyone had any experience in this area?

Thanks in advance.

To clarify the gearbox is a 3hp 12:30 clutched sealed box as described p. 40 spares book.

Why are you removing the pinion bearing, pinion shaft & the pinion drive sleeve if there's nothing amiss with them?

good point Charles, I am rapidly coming to the same decision re my OA. the pinion and pinion bearings are fine so there is little point in risking a very tricky extraction procedure.

Because I suspect the oil seals may be leaking...
Because they are covered in something unpleasant and I'd like to clean them...
Because I would like to know that my seagull is 100% servicable...

Then just renew the oil seals.
