weight, not oil but motor

Post by bruce nickerson »

Been looking everyplace but the right one to find the weight of the various models. Am finishing a small pram/punt (8 foot length x 4ft beam) and am concerned about the weight of my Seagull, with or without its feathers. Advice, info pls?

My 40 Plus std shaft weighs 13.64 kg with an empty tank. I use that on a 10ft 10" Mirror dinghy

My 40 Featherweight weighs 13.56kg with about 2/3 tank of fuel.. I use that on an 8ft pram dinghy

A 2.5 hp 4 stroke Suzuki is 13.0 kg . Tohatsu ( many makes are rebadged Tohatsus) 18.4 kg, Yamaha 17 kg, 2.3 hp Honda 13.5 kg.

Small two strokes were generally lighter than current 4 stokes Eg a 2 hp 2 stroke Yamaha was only 10kg.

Hi,
You could consider a Forty Minus. The sales brochure states 26lbs (ie 11.8kg).
My SJM weighs about this(just checked it with a spring balance) and is certainly good for my 8ft pram dinghy.
Cheers

Rob:

Good on ya.

Check out this webaite. The boat I have almost finished is shown on thte bottom of the page. Ever build your own boat? These are as much fun as the Seagulls.

Sorry I didn't give you the link:

Here's another about Dynamite Payson and Phil Bolger, originators of the Instant Boats.

I guess Bolger/Payson and co. have their proven ideas ... I prefer to go my own way to design and build boats to suit my requirements, one of is to suit a Seagull.
Here's another example ...

Beautiful!!! I don't have the patience or skill to tackle anything like this. I spent my younger days racing an MG rather than learning woodworking skills. Now in the twighlight of my years (74 in June) I am more interested in getting on the water than butchering wood and crreating sawdust and wood shavings. Picked up on Seagulls when my MG demanded too much time to prepare for next week's event. Also less expensive. And as an Anglophile they are still endearing examples of British engineering.

I like the lines of your boat, the wineglass transom, etc. Is she lapstrake?

Hello Bruce, I gave up my MG TD after 21 engine rebuilds (sleeved block etc) and a few Gymkanas and high speed interstate trips. And as I'm approaching 70 I've slowed down building boats and restoring Seagulls for the boats.
