I have removed petrol station underground tanks in the past.

We had them degassed before we cut them up.

It is the petrol vapour that creates an explosive mix with air. No vapour no bang.

Ahoy Capt Anarak,
Reporting a total failure to remove cap ends,perhaps the old firm used Klingon technology. When the end cap of the round 102 long range tank started to glow cherry red I gave up trying to prise it off. Do you think that I should have gone to bright red or white hot or is there another way? Heat applied came from the same type of gun/laser you used.Is it brazed on do you think?

What size of burner are you using?

It needs to be quite big, you are looking to get the whole end cherry red, not just local heating. I would not think that they would complicate things by brazing the ends on, when siver soldering is easy and more that adequate for the job.

Am still waiting for my mate to get some of the solder from my tank tested, They need to have legitimate test to do as well as my solder.
The scanning electron microscope that they use needs liquid nitrogen to cool the sample, so special delivery.(Nokia bought the kit but almost never use it!, but it has been used to find out the properties of a bronze traction engine bearings)

Other people have taken round 102 tanks apart with no problems, try a larger burner, if that fails pop it in the post and I will take the ends off for you.
