FREE!!!! Come get it....

Post by westcoaster » Sun Aug 11, 2019 11:31 pm

Yup, Free seagull. Come get it. An SOS exclusive offer....
Located in Surrey BC (Canada, eh) close to #10 highway and 132.

As seen in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6574&start=15

and this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTiDw3x ... e=youtu.be

I had my fun with it, got it running without any parts other than gasket maker and gained a new appreciation for the British Seagull motor. This still requires some parts before it can push a boat.
Time for me to move it along.
Came to me for nothing, will pass it along for nothing.

Fix it up or part it out. Your call....

Yes remember your story of this motor from when I first joined the group. Was impressed then that you managed to get the motor striped and was equaly impressed that she ran again!
A nice gesture to give her away, hope someone will take up the offer.

Dave.

You've got a boat, why not go & get it?

You could test it on the return journey.

It's only just a bit over 11,000 Km!

You could refuel in Hawaii.

Great idea, 11000 kms in an open boat.
Be ok if you could take an xtra passenger as ballast and to hack up if supplies run short.
Would that be called pollution ?

Lets run the numbers.

11,000km is 6,000 nautical miles. Assuming that the boat can average 4 knots for the journey, it should only take around 62 days non stop to complete. The factory estimate of fuel consumption for a 40 plus is 5.75 gallons/hour so 260 gallons of 10:1 should do it. Thats a little still shy of a ton of fuel, so plenty of room left in the dinghy for a passenger and supplies.

Did you mean gallons/hour or gallons/day?

Would a 40+ be the most suitable Seagull, I'd think about a Curlew, 64cc, a clutch, 25:1, way better miles/gallon, quieter & as much oomph as a Century. ( a Curlew uses a Model 75 Century lower unit & prop & spins them 500+ engine revs faster).

You wouldn't need that much fuel if you were having a bathroom stop in Hawaii!

So you could take a cabin boy, someones got to make the tea.

So If I use my 20" that will give me the room for the fuel sitting on the floor.
The food may be a problem. If there is a tone of fuel (and that is lighter than water) then with all the tins of beans and and beer to last 62 days that has to make at least 3 tone.

Did you take the trade winds and tide into consideration?
This might be a doable thing!

You cant say cabin BOY You need say cabin person!

I'm so sorry!

I'm blaming that dreadful gender assignment error on "old timers disease"!

I sincerely hope I didn't distress too many of our readers.

I meant gallons/hr. This was the figure quoted by BS. I based the fuel calculation on this.

My understanding of those figures are that at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle you should get 5.75 hours running from 1 gallon of fuel.

That give you a fuel consumption figure of about 4.25 Imperial gallons for 24 hours running at less than 3/4 throttle.

Assuming you can achieve 4 knots at 3/4 throttle that would give you a figure of 22.6 nautical miles per imperial gallon.

So your right on the total fuel required, but you did mean gallons per day.

I did work on 5.75 hours/gallon. Same result as you, just a different method.

Distance 11,000 km = 6,000 nautical miles
at 4 knots (4 nautical miles/hrs) then total time required is 1500 hours.
at 5.75 hrs/gallon, fuel required is 1500/5.75 = 260 gallons

At 22.6 nautical miles/gallon, fuel required is 6,000/22.6 = 265 gallons (same result)

weight of fuel = 234 x 7.2 lb = 1685 lb
weight of oil = 26 x 8 b = 208 lb
total weight of fuel = 1893 lbs

The nautical mile and knot are such natural units of measurement that we should lobby to change to them from the metric system.
