Very Interesting Find

Post by JERSEYMAN »

Hello All, it's been a long time but here now,

A funny thing happened to me today, I went to pick up a tractor tyre from a farm and got talking to the farmer, 85 years old this year, the conversation turned to engines an then to Seagulls, the farmer said he had several in the shed if I wanted them, What a shed it was, choc-a-blok with old engines, farm machinery, a couple of pre war tractors, stationary engines, a ford model T complete engine, old motor cycles with girder forks, loads of old outboards some quite large from the 50's/60's/70's and in the corner a pile of Seagull outboards and a Marston!

He told me he was the second owner of the Marston and he bought it just after the war but never got round to using it, there seems to have fairly good compression and was told that he had it running "a few years ago". The motor is complete and seems pretty original to me and fairly untouched (none of the bolts or screws are chewed and the slot head screws are still sharp)

If any one could be of help as to the originality and any info on this model as I cannot find any information on this model on the Net, the model number is, OK.552.0.123 Thank You

Oh by the way, I managed to pick up 5 Seagull outboards, a pile of spares and the Marston all for the asking price of £50, when I questioned if that was enough he replied as long as they were going to a good home, what more could I have said.

The disturbing thing was that this farmer mentioned that he had another couple of these "domed top" Seagulls "with the funny exhaust" lying around but could not remember where he had put them

Blimey a marston with the reversing gearbox. A real find, and a restorers dream. There are some pictures of a similar example on the marston page on the main SOS website.

BLOODY HELL :D

That's quite possibly the outboard find of the century. Nice one, hope to see more of it.

I'd be interested in seeing some of the old bikes the farmer has.

Bracket looks like my ON bracket.

That is a complicated rebuild, take loads of pictures before you take it apart.

Yes, stripping and rebuilding the reversing gearbox will be a fascinating task. Excellent. 8)

What I am telling about you people up there is that if you walk in the fields with high grass and you stumble it is 50% to be a rock and the other 50% is a Seagull :D :D :D

What a Ripping Find!

Gently gently with it. What FUN you will have.

I always thought that the "barn Find" was a myth as nobody I know has ever found anything of great rarity by chance.

The crazy thing was that he was sure he had another, we spent quite a bit of time looking through piles of oddments as high as the sealing and then those dreadful words as he tapped his watch "time for lunch I will look later"

I have no intention in ever selling it, it will get restored properly and get hung in the living room and fired up for those special occasions :D

Thats brilliant. It's nice to see that "going to a good home" is more important than selling for a high price.

We are of course all planning a holiday in Jersey very soon, in fact I hear there has been a run on the Flybe website. :D

I was storm bound in St Helier last august for 3 days. So close but so far. :?

Good man You!

When I have an Old Dear in Hand it always stays with me.

I just help others out with good useable shrapnel left over.

Gooduns stay attached aye!

Nice to see that one, totally honest, completely as found, no bodging, no messing around.

When the time comes to play gearboxes take as much advice as you can get, it's not like you can find bits for them on the Bay or from John!

This is a very nice find. Sure does overshadow my plain Marston. I am envious
