Another Old Dear

Post by Collector Inspector »

Introducing as of today an Evinrude Sportwin model 4287 1938.

Serial is 02475.

Had to have it at AU$95.

Was stuck but a 6" adjustable on the nut and a thump..................free as a bird.

work in progress.

Looks very much like a seaking, just a different tank.

Spark First is always the way to go. Absolute mess but maybe OK. No point gap but the incorrect plugs were actually firing at some stage. Clean up and electrical tested done and dusted.

Coil Primary: 2.5 Ohm
Coils Secondary: 6.9Kohm each.
Cap: 1.59

What a mess with no point gap from get go.

Clean up looks OK

Should be a winner................soon.

Under the plate................no holes or cracks but a lot of years sitting aye..

Pics no order at all............

Black paint is pretty much standard on those early Evinrude/Elto magnetos.

Whilst I can understand why they did it, it's less than ideal IMHO.

Good to see some progress B.

Progress

Spark times two. reliable 5mm. I will get another capacitor later.

Compression both, a whopping 35psi each. Barrels off to check for stuck rings etc before starting it just in case.

It's most probably just a coating that protects the ignition system from water ingress, as the entire system is covered in it once its been built, most motors don't bother.

Exactly the paint in that it sealed everything from moisture and related marine ingress. Kind of a value add even back then.

Gulls painted the magnets on flywheels, well later Villiers and Wipac certainly did. No magnetic magic suffered.

While I am not a fan of "Black" I am a fan of making sure that any "Magneto" Gull or not, has some protective coating. Some of you may have noticed that I use a clear satin coat on hard yards ignition revamps.

American early mags are all painted black/whatever to seal in the ignition goodness that we love and respect so putting back to black face after getting them to true grits/scratch seems fair enough.

Hmmmmm That may be Socially incorrect now.......go figure up to your bandwidth.

OH and by the way right now it is cold, and wet, and with very little improvement over the weekend so Cello and I may just do telly and the heater..............................................and Port!

Nice one B!

I have serial 00479 and bits of 01303.
You may recall there was a problem with the magneto base plate not being a snug fit and rattling around as a result.

I think I have an unbroken tiller arm here somewhere which you are welcome to if you wish.
Talk soon,

Cheers

My point exactly Keith. God idea to help protect against water ingress, but the choice of color is poor. It's near on impossible to see anything, especially with older, failing eyes.

I can paint silver but maybe others have another option.

Bearing in mind this one (and the one of Boyd) were initially wartime no paint aye.
