Why Always This?

Remember my TSD Pup a couple of years ago?

Hardly used and really cool.............everything came apart and serviced ready to go.........could not get the flywheel off? Broken key and I have still not got the bloody thing detached! :evil:

Well here is something that is very similar in an Anzani Minor MKII which has seen very little use.

The flywheel will not be moved! Yes I have tried all the tricks once again and not a sausage.

At the moment it sits on a stand with the wee Bantamag extremely stressed just using the rope sheave set up as the puller plate..........I have heated the thing to just short of destroying the Wico sticker on the coil......yeh it is that original. Spray stuff into the taper and it runs away down straight away.

Another spun key is what I am thinking.

The rope sheave is not up to the task of more force so I will make a steel plate and use more robust fasteners than the standard affixing screws.

I broke one head bolt but that has been rectified easy.................it was a case of not enough heat in the first place.

Interesting one Bruce. I have an early Britannia with the same problem. Can you get a puller with wide legs and footprint on there to apply constant pressure, and heat at the same time?

I'm thinking that puller legs that are at least an inch wide located under the flywheel rim might work?

This is a flywheel made by Wipac & cast from the usual alloy mix, so brittle & quite thin.

Might break away from the steel centre boss & heat won't help much!

The only way to get this off is with the fixing screw holes in the flywheel. Any pressure on the outside will break it for sure. It is thin ,has holes in it and is brittle as a glass.

Make a propper puller plate, put pressure on the flywheel then give the nut a thump... Not with a 4lb hammer!

I'm with Nudge on this.
Screws/bolts through the rope sheave, tight as you dare,soak if you think it's right, heat if you think it'll help, then show it who's boss. (similar to how i remove brake drums on cars that havn't been apart in years!)

I have the same problem on my Ferrior (Inferrior)
I made a plate and used the 4 flywheel bolt holes. Used plenty of heat, lots of soaking, several good hits, and a few new words. So far, the flywheel is still in place.
Im hoping if I leave it for long enough, the outboard fairies will fix it for me. LOL

Outboard Fairies are a bit scarce by the sounds of it.

I was thinking making a steel plate instead of the rope sheave and really give it the suds.......

The screw holes are in only the flywheel cheese metal.........it has no hub :x

If I get too carried away it WILL definitely bugger it up.

I will keep what tension I have and keep heating/cooling/lubricating and being mindful as to what I now know.......always pays to visit a box of bits.

The taper is very short and very steep. The key is somewhat delicate.

SNAP!

Just about had a heart failure......................I thought the centre had popped when I had another go. :shock:

I warmed it up same as before before before, wrapped the strap wrench around and just touched the spanner.
That was quite a few goes over the last daylight hours and leaving overnight without backing off the tension.

It is all fine 8)

Needed a clean up. Someone greased the bloody thing. It had set like the proverbial to a blanket. It was heat that made it let go.

Pulled everything from the backing plate except coil. Cleaned and put it all back together.

Coil reads 3ohm and 3.2Kohm. Good

Points continuity and not when open. Good

Condenser floats erratically averaging 0.61 mF. Bad

I will gut condenser and insert something of 0.1 - 0.2 so it still looks original.

Nice one Bruce. I have been thinking about my Britannia that has the same problem, but the flywheel is already cracked from previous owners trying to remove it.

Went to downtown very warm Osborne Park and purchased a few RG51210 630v 0.1uf caps today, stock number is from Jaycar.

They test out nicely as to what the Minor needs.

A bit too big to hide in the original canister though.

Voltage is OK but capacitance is a bit low, but might well work, I'm told that they normally used 0.2 to 0.25 uf caps.
