Saving Old Seagulls

Progressed the resto a tad further this weekend, and learned a few things along the way. Some good, some not so good!

Anyway, following pics tell the story, but will kick off with a snap of some information received from Barry Sheltrum, son of Len Sheltrum founder of the Riptide Outboard Motor Company.



First task was to make the gaskets needed before reassembly could commence. Ended up using 1.2mm compressed fiber rated at 400C albeit that the temperatures will never get that high.

Moved on to the trunk thinking I could then use this as a work platform only to realise that I don't have any spare outboard stands. No big deal, it needed to be reassembled anyway.







The blue stuff is just high build primer overspray all of which has now been removed.





Repainted the base section inside lower cowl ie to reflect the original paint scheme.



Single gasket for engine and exhaust ie again to reflect the original set up.



Looking a lot more respectable under here now.



Just a point to note. Water pick up must be connected before the mid-section is refitted. Will be leaving that till next week. Probably wise to seal the tube to the rubber grommet ie to prevent any possibility of it falling out during water pump/impeller replacement.



Support bracket, fuel bowl and crank case fittings





Carb and magneto fitted for the purpose of checking operation of synch ie with linkages fitted. This confirmed the bend in synch plate was excessive, causing it to foul against the linkages as the magneto was rotated throughout its range. Straightened the synch plate. It now clears the linkages and provides WOT which we didn't have before. Carb will be removed again to facilitate re-assembly of the forward/neutral linkages and allow for shift shaft adjustment.

AA word of thanks must go to "Chair" of "The Board" for supplying images of his Riptide Sportsman.

I've been able to use Davids photos to piece together what the decals would have looked like. Not 100% sure about the 'R' just yet. Had to use creative license on that as there was nothing really to work from. So all considered a work in progress for now, with some 10-12 hours already invested to get them to where they are.



Will scour the net for more images, hopefully get that 'R' 100% perfect before going to print.

Well, not exactly.

I do all the artwork on MS Powerpoint (less than ideal), export as a jpg or similar and send the file out to a print company.

They then print on super thin vinyl decal material and send back to me ready to apply to the outboard. The vinyl is UV resistant and can be sprayed over with a clear coat if required.

They're not exactly same as original (most were water slide back in the day) but add considerably to the look of a restored outboard.

I do them as needed and now have available artwork for Anzani Pilot, Gold Cheetah and Riptide Sportsman.

Heading to Sydney next week and to Brazil (dates to be confirmed) next month. Subject to other commitments I hope to finish the Sportsman in between ..... otherwise it'll be after the Brazil trip before it's finished and ready to fire up.

I do find that the weather makes a big difference to enthusiasm. I also find that the more birthdays you have, the less drive you have.

By 59 ownership had transferred to Westcott Hazel, and by 63 (I think) it was all over for Riptide Outboards.

This one (as well as several others) have been sitting unassembled and waiting for parts for several months now.

Will have to pull my finger out and finish them soon.

Melbourne weather not the best this time of year (unless you come from England of course lol). I do all my work out doors, so it's a struggle for me to stay motivated in this cold.

Spring is not too far off though. Can't wait.
