The threads I reworked today were BSW. There are several BSF threads also that I did not need to touch.

Greek Easter weekend in Australia so the plan was to take it easy, but as you expect things don't always go to plan.

Found myself in the garage around 9:00am and playing outboards soon thereafter. Progressed the Anzani Pilot a little further and continued to clean up Riptide parts in anticipation of applying primer next week.

Also spent a couple hours working on the middle cowl section, the stainless requiring a bit of elbow grease and the front plate having to be reworked completely due to build up of salt and corrosion. Anyway, both came up reasonably well albeit still needing some work before they are fully completed.

Are you sure the thread pattern isn't UNC, UNF, check very carefully as you wouldn't want to clean your threads with the wrong tap.

Water pump finally out and another BIG thank you message to Bruce for his guidance and support.

Bruce sent me a couple of pics that showed exactly what I was dealing with below the water pump and possibly preventing it from being removed. The main shaft is in fact two piece with a small cylindrical splined collar forming the connection between the two pieces below the water pump itself. The collar on my Sportman was fabricated from mild steel. Build up of rust over the years and dried up grease basically caused it to bond (for want of another word) with the stainless shaft pieces.

Having lubricated each night of the past week, I expected it to come free easily this morning. I was wrong. Over three hours work to get the damn thing apart.

As you would expect, rubber impeller is in bad shape and will need to be replaced and without any form of ID on the unit, finding a suitable replacement (more than likely Merc, Johnno or Rude) will be fun. Anyway, we are moving forward, albeit more slowly than ever imagined.

Spent the next couple of hours cleaning and de-buring all splined parts. Shaft ends now fit where they need to with ease. This should make reassembly a heck of a lot more pleasant.

Will more on to the ignition components next which looks at lot more complicated than it really is. Coils test fine, so I should have spark one the points are given a good clean up.

With most parts still needing some work (eg holes filled, siezed screws etc removed) it will probably be another week or so before I can start to apply the primer.

That ignition is exactly the same as what's on an Anzani unitwin, pretty much most parts copied and import some, like they did with other motors.

Guys, the ignition system is all imported, WICO PACY SALES CORP LTD, BLETCHLEY ENGLAND ie as used in many outboards, mowers and stationary engines of that era. There is nothing copied here to the best of my knowledge.

Single coil versions of this ignition system featured on other Riptide outboards (eg Fisherman and Fisherman Deluxe) and probably on other Australian made outboards of different brand/manufacture.

Probably not, even though the cowling looks distinctly Mercury, clips and all.

G'day Keith,

Sheltrum raced boats for many many years and in fact there are races run in his honour to this day.

Most (if not all) of Sheltrum's race boats were fitted with Mercury outboards.

There is no doubt inspiration for the Sportsman design came from Mercury. That has been covered on page 1 of this thread.

It would be nice to know that we can move on from this and focus on the resto at hand.
