Effingham in Surrey -- shouldn't that town be twinned with Effin in Ireland.
I was in Cork bus station once when a Priest asked where the Effin bus was.
Best of luck with the engine -- that is an Effin task.

I wish I could pick the easy ones, you try getting someone to cut new gears for you, or finding & changing the imperial big end needles & having new pins made for a 5 piece 2 cylinder crank, with having to become a rent grandad.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Re: OMG What have I just bought !!!
I has a wicked bronze/ brass gear box.
All I need is a pair of cylinder and a prop, then good to go.
Not sure of the age not mentioned in "The Old Outboard Book" must be early thirties.
What is the chance of getting a pair of cylinder for one of these ?

P.S. just found it 1934 2.8 HP

Re: OMG What have I just bought !!!
Thanks Bruce,
I need to find out if the Canadian cylinders are the same as any others.
It is coming apart quite well.
The tank has cleaned up quite well. I have been asked to send pictures of this to a collector in Canada, which I have done.
Just need to get the pistons out of the cylinders.
Cast iron crankcase was a surprise.
Gearbox free, crankshaft bearings good.

Re: OMG What have I just bought !!!
Could you fill us in on how these engines work? Is there two different cavities in the crankcase for each piston? Do both conrods use a common crank pin?

Andy
2 pins 180 degrees apart
common crankcase
self balancing they run very smooth
2 sparks at the same time.

Carb cleaned up well.
Have been speaking to a guy in Canada who has engine 24238, I have 24228.
He only knows of three of these engines, they were built for export.
Mine is the only one that has a tank decal
It was made in 1935 not 1934.
The cylinders may be common with other Johnson engines.

Re: OMG What have I just bought !!!
A guy in the states has offered me a parts book for the price of the postage.
There are nice people out there on the interweb.
The cylinder look like they are common with 3 other Johnson types, so looking hopeful.
As Bruce said I need to speak to Douglas Penn, he is the man to find that sort of thing.
Found this advert for the OB 65, export model had bronze gearbox .

This is a similar engine that has the same cylinders
