Nice speed in the smooth water.

I am constantly being informed that my choice of a heavy displacement boat for the bass strait is wrong and that I should emulate the racers. However to date I have not seen these boats preform in anything but relatively calm water. The round Bermuda has swell to contend with but the period is 18second plus and so for a small boat there are no breaking waves to contend with.

As slick as these boats are I do not think I would be inclined to head into an open strait crossing of 160kl with the potential of encountering high wind and steep standing waves. Of course it is not the intention to end up in that sort of weather but the potential is there.

I love the concept of the race boats but even in my Sealegs (NZ amphibious RIB capable of 40knots) I have been forced to cut down to displacement speed in the heavy breaking waves of the channel. I am not avers to flying her off roiling waves, breaking seas in another matter though.

Great effort though and I applaud the refined technology that goes into both the engines and hull forms to produce these speeds.

Your not looking a Bermudian hulls here but at Kiwi river race boats, these have evolved over the last 25 years just for the conditions found down the Waikato.

Are there any Bermudians out there who can post a typical south shore video?

Mr. Large... there's some mild footage after 3 minutes into the video - not a particularly rough year though. Some years are more fun than others, seeing your bow through & under breaking waves more often than not on South Shore...

Good video I rest my case Charles!!! but yes I am sure it can be much worse than that...nice turn of speed though from some of the boats.

I would love to get a GOpro of something like that so we could get more videos up like that. But the cost of a Gopro is over the top at the moment!
