Bermuda RISR 2013

Post by Charles uk »

69 boats entered for this years RISR, that is going to be some race!

This is an island with a population of 68,000 & means that 0.2 % of the population will be using a British Seagull next Saturday.

If the same happened here that would be circa 60,000 boats.

Imagine the TV coverage & sponsership that would stimulate & the price rises in the Seagull marketplace!

I'm told there's not a ripple on the water in Bermuda.

No news yet other than one of our members found a floating bit of rope, to be more accurate his propeller did, when he was keeping up with the record holder, so going real good!

So rope stopped play sounds just as depressing as rain stopped play.

This was me. Picked up a piece of rope that jammed between prop and gearcase. It stopped the engine so abruptly that I though engine had seized. Engine was a silver century with a Kingfisher crank. The crank is good for improved performance as the big end uses bearings. The bad part is the crank is a 3 piece unit. So when I picked up the rope, the bottom half of the crank stopped as the prop had stopped turning. however the top half of the crank would still have turning momentem from the flywheel and possibly the power stroke of the engine. End result is the top half twisted in the relation to the bottom half of the crank. End result is the crank turns stiff now as the bottom and top halves are no longer in alignment with each other. Probably only out a millimeter or two, but enough to take me out of the race.
Was I running well? Yes I was. I was not quite as fast as the record holder, but extremely close. I was counting on my better driving skills to make up for the small difference in speed. Based on my speed up to this point I have expected to come within 5 minutes of the record.
As a comparison, last year I was probably a good 2-3 mph slower than the record holder boat/engine.

Here's this years results, Sorry about the mess they were in a table

It's 42 miles, for the whole course & the final number for each competitor is the total time, if you want to work out the speed.
Remember minimum of 2 in a boat in the open sea.

When the Bermudians say Seaweed, they mean seaweed, so much floating weed that it's not possible to see a way around it, they just have to try & force a way through the lightest concentration, stopping to clean the prop when the steam or vibration gets too bad!
