Hi Charles uk,
watching with interest!
I am a regular Hayling sailor and am torn between the views of both Robin and you. I too looked off the bridge today at no water!
Anyway, Tee shirts, have a look at sublimation printing as a option. I have one at work and will investigate if I can use it. I bought it last year and never got round to setting it up. (just out of it's box!) I will have a look and find out how much ink costs. The process I think is you print out a design with special ink onto a film and iron it on, also does mugs!
Also HISC reinvented a round the island windsurf event last year, they may have some info you could use IE tide flows and best course to follow.
Will get back if I can work out how to use the machine!

Dark blue polo would be good.

It turns out that Hayling Island is somewhat smaller than we were told, the dark line is exactly a Half Marathon long & if you see how close I was forced to go to the land you will see there is no possibility of competitors cutting corners to shorten the couse.

In fact depending on how brave the competitors are, some if not all will have to extend their track to avoid running through the breakers on the coastal side.

So this event looks like it will be a Half Marathon apart from perhaps the modified class who could if their hulls are fast enough, go round twice.

Blue got the tidal flow charts, thanks for them.

It doesn't look like we will see more than a Knot anywhere at the times we were planning.

Simples!

Whilst I would love to do this trip, my boat 'n gull combo do not meet your entirely sensible safety requirements. Could we perhaps coax one or three more people down with their 40's, Featherweights and Minus's, if we had an Under 40s expedition from the start point direct to East Head for a picnic, with the possibility of waving you all on once you are over the harbour entrance bar?

We're running this half marathon as an experiment to see whether Hayling island is a suitable venue for this type of event.
Whilst it would be lovely to include everyone, we have to err on the side of caution until we really know what we're doing, things like risk assessments for both harbour masters (Chichester & Langstone) is going to be a new experience.

With only 2 safety boats, we have to keep the flock in a small group while on the costal stretch, & the only way to do that, is the minimum speed 5 mph limit, if you feel you can do that in the open sea & your boat is over 3.5 meters long, it would be very hard to justify your exclusion.

If I remember right we still live in a free country so anyone can turn up, the more the merrier is my view, & we still need a starter/timekeeper if you need an excuse for your wife.

What about Dell Quay to some point in Langstone?

Time can be altered to make it interesting/easy with the tides depending on appetite.

Dell Quay round the island and back to Del Quay is about 27 miles.

Three hour run, does Dell Quay dry out at low water?

Well for the Under 40s we could do a rally, Dell Quay to East Head, picnic lunch and return?

It's been a good few years since I sailed up to Dell Quay. At low tide you could not tie up at the Quay itself but I seem to recall there is the ability to launch a dinghy at all states of tide. Clearly we should time such a rally to go to East Head on the ebb and return on the flood.

Charles and I will do a recce tomorrow as the weather looks ok.

I will try and take some pictures enroute and will post them on the forum.

We will be using my 14 ft yellow boat and trusty 102.

If anyone wants to wave us off we will be leaving the slip at about 11.30.

We might even have room for a small one. Doubt if we can tempt RBT up for the morning.

H-A

P.S. Once we have tried out the course we will be more able to post the proposed date. watch this space.
Don't forget that this will be the longest Seagull race in Europe :)
