Re: serial numbers for a 102

Here are some pics to show progress. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/002-2.jpg Prop and broken spring come off to reveal just how bent the propellor shaft is! http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/001-3.jpg And this is what's in the gearbox. http://i278.photobucke...

Re: cutting out

No. I've been running at 3/4 power out on the open water. No plug problems.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: cutting out

So, changed the head gasket but still only runs for 20 mins. No marks inside the block to indicate problems there. Any more suggestions?

Re: serial numbers for a 102

Thanks Chris! A couple of questions that will display my seagull maintenance ignorance; ..The gearbox contents have turned into a sticky brown gel, is there a suitable solvent or is a strip down the best method to clean? ..I wanted to clean the carby, but the float and needle seem to be retained in ...

serial numbers for a 102

I gather this is a 102 model, but I can't find the serial numbers. Any suggestions? http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/newseagull001-1.jpg http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/newseagull002.jpg http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/newseagull003-1.jpg...

Re: Another boat for the Murray River

The steering may be better with the motor forward but I the fumes would be annoying. Side by side I don’t think the speed would be that different the Russell R has a longer waterline may have the edge loaded. At nearly 22’ long the Russell R rows OK, stand up rowing. after the Goolwa Wooden Boat Fe...

Re: Another boat for the Murray River

Don’t understand why you would want to change either design. Beams are the same; 5'8", but the RR is nearly 2' longer, giving that extra bit of room for a long trip. I'd be using a mix of old and new, Seagulls and a 5hp Tohatsu, so the power available will be more suited to the PC than the RR....

Another boat for the Murray River

I have been reading the Murray River Boat thread below here and am contemplating building a similar boat myself for a similar trip. Then I keep looking at the Seagull Trunnell plans and wondering about doing a trunnell conversion on the basic Russell R design that they used. I can see value in bring...

Re: cutting out

So, Riptide out of the way for now and it's back to the Seagull.
I have a head gasket on order, but tell me, does anyone ever make their own?

Re: Time for the Riptide.

Here she goes. Don't worry about the purple lines, they are just some sunlight leakage in the lens. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/th_011.mp4 I'm still not sure about what to do with the ignition advance. Should I tighten it up so's it does not move around so freely once the mo...

Re: Time for the Riptide.

Well, I'm not going to die wondering about this, so into the workshop this morning, disconnect the cooling tube from the head, 4 bolts, a gentle tap with a rubber hammer and she's off. Here's the head. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/001-2.jpg Here's the other side of the equati...

Re: Time for the Riptide.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/001-1.jpg Flushing the cooling with a silicone nozzle fitted to the hose. A good idea! Good flow all round! Then tried to start it with the prop off and in a tub of water. A couple of kicks and then nothing. Looked at the sparking plug... covered...

Re: Time for the Riptide.

That's a Wico-Pacy ignition. There's a 2 cylinder version (2 lots of yours) sitting in a box at my feet waiting for some attention, that came off an Anzani that I'm trying to find a contact breaker for. That's the sort of engineering that reminds me of dour Scotsmen with square fingers. I can pictu...

Re: Time for the Riptide.

Somewhat later the same day.... http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/synwhistles/006.jpg It's a bit untidy, but this is a piece of delrin, drilled and filed internally to fit the flywheel nut and formed externally to fit this socket. (A bigger socket would have been better but nevermind for now....
