Re: 97cc Seagull

Good stuff, GarethJ. The faster Silver Centuries here have had good luck with the standard 400 series Amal carbs. Re: the 2.5:1 gear box - are you working with one from the 102 or the clutched Century? There have been a few posts in the past on this that you might have seen already - but have you th...

Re: Modified 102

Well - that's me lost. You went from writing a novella on wanting to fill combustion chambers, making hidden expansion pipes, installing reed blocks, etc., to now not wanting to 'go mad' & only looking 'to go a little bit quicker', after some advice starts coming in. None of the modifications yo...

Re: 97cc Seagull

? What are you on about?

You’ve obviously completely misunderstood Charles. I can guarantee you there’s no nerve touched there - especially with him being one of the few I try to bore to tears from time to time...

Re: Modified 102

I don’t, sorry - working on different motors at the moment. The #4 was in the Kingfisher, before they moved to the needle rollers, I think. For the mods you’re suggesting, I wouldn’t use any of the traditional BS cranks with ali conrods, personally. I was just selling the needle roller replacement c...

Re: 97cc Seagull

Ha. I do love my dremel and $5 box of bits - that's true...! (And I've just been lucky to have a few extremely knowledgeable mates who haven't gotten bored of my many stupid questions yet... 8) )

Always good to see how other enthusiasts go about solving the same problems. Fun stuff...

Re: 97cc Seagull

Ha - for us this side of the pond, they're cheaper to get in your hand than a new BS bushing crank & con rod. Was just picking up on Charles' mention of the BS kingfisher needle roller crank - which haven't been available for sale for years from BS - that's all. Really like seeing what you've do...

Re: Modified 102

Jon, my understanding is that as Seagull adopted the more powerful QB design, they found the old crank design (the conrod, in particular) was not strong enough.

Cue BS introducing beefer ali conrods for the QB series, then steel conrods & roller bearing cranks, etc.

Re: Boats ans Seagulls.

As in - a good starting point might be to take a look at the problems BS encountered (and the changes they began to make to try to solve them), when they began adopting more powerful, efficient power head designs in the later model ranges. You're likely going to be asking far more of a 102 crankshaf...

Jon,

Sounds like you've been talking to Charles at some point. But there's a step or two missing in there, maybe ...?

You're a star, thanks Charles. Sounds like you've saved me some time rummaging around your boot tomorrow when you weren't looking (no, that's not a euphemism, sorry...!)

If a drawing to be 3D printed to make a cast doesn't pan out - I plan to steal Charles' when he's not looking & use it to make a casting. Don't tell him. 8)

Re: Moderator's Meeting

Back on track - just to clarify, it's the 102 data Jon says he's collecting that I'd be interested in seeing pinned (along with Hugo's SD data & Jeremy's 40 data)- so members/guest can very gratefully follow along, post pics of their own examples, etc. Hopefully, Jeremy & Hugo will feel diff...

Re: Moderator's Meeting

Calm down.

Does a spreadsheet of owner supplied data need to be ‘finished’ to head a pinned thread allowing for accompanying posted pics? Surely it’s considered to be an evolving document, just laid out for all to see & benefit from.

It’s a suggestion. That’s all.
