Hi John, another Phil here. Yes you are confused, you have just checked the float level valve. The bit you need to check is on the end of the throttle cable. Accessed from the top of the carb, not the bottom. Undo the ring on top of the carb, withdraw the whole assembly and all will become clear. re...

Hi, just a reply about mixing, I use a gallon of petrol in a can and add to that a measure of oil. I have a marked milk bottle and about 1 1/2" of oil does the job. I mix in the can so as not to dump neat oil into the fuel line, I can also top up when running and not hang off the back with oil ...

So to be clear, one moment situation normal and the next no drive and dirty cooling water. Sounds like you have a broken drive shaft. Thats the square tube inside the smaller down tube. The crud in the water is from the inside of the decomposed drive shaft. First check that the prop rotates without ...

your clutch should just be bashed in/out. If it stalls the motor then you have a gearbox problem. Others will help you with that but its just a case of strip and free up and hope for the best that damage is repairable.

over a year in the heads

What a good weekend afloat. Not enough wind to sail but never the less a good one in an invader 22' until yesterday lunch time. The 200 hour old yanmar 1gm10 starts to puff and complain, surging and producing black water discharge, then will not run above 1/2 throttle. Crawled to the berth at 2 knot...

simple solution is to modify the flywheel nut with two pins. Then use the standard hand cranking claw from the end of an old landrover starting handle in the drill.

Hi,
bit stumped here. Are you totally sure of the order things happen? One of my 40's will run for a while, then will die off and stop. The water stops flowing just before it dies. Answer, it has a leaking head gasket. Spark plug is wet with water, not fuel. Have you checked for the same?

Hi, what is the oil leak? If it is black oil like sludge coming from the base of the large tube (exhaust) then it is nothing to be worried about. It is unburnt fuel oil and normal. Check the gearbox oil, the plastic bung is a filler and level plug. You will need Whitworth Spanners to strip your moto...

Hi,
glad to see SOS back on line. Was it a Friday the 13th thing, or a 666 thing that made it all fall over? Humm, how many members on this forum?

can you check the spelling, I think it was sent to Glenquoich Lodge. Sadly now under a hydro-electric power-station lake. Maybe they needed a motor for after the flood in the 50's.

Think I understand now. The seagull produces an excess of electricity, this then leaks out of the sparkplug into the cylinder, as smoke. The piston forces the smoke out of the exhaust. So the fuel/oil is only needed to lubricate the motor. No fuel, no lubrication so the motor doesn't run. So, was th...

make do and mend

I have seen lots of posts talking about buying spare parts and originality. I come from a make do and mend family. My nan was married in 1936, and died in 1988. During her married life she owned one broom, it may have had many heads and many handles, but she only owned one broom. Was it original? Wh...

Hi all,
seagulls are made to work and be fixed with little equipment and only basic skills, so good for you! There are no shops at sea, so work with what you have got.

I have been watching this thread for a while now and have a suggestion, either end it now, or continue to form the longest thread in SOS history.
But please be nice to each other!

Looking closer at the image it looks like the exhaust tube is split below the clip, so is it a clamp as suggested by timberman?
