Re: Cleaner engines
Try it if for no reason other than to see if your engine performs better, but don't count on it being a greener alternative. Aspen states they take the gasses from the top of the distilling tower and synthetically reconvert it to a liquid. How much additional energy and waste do you suppose that pro...

You could very well be correct, as it is one of the random photos that appear on the AOMCI home page.

Re: locating points
You've got the 2 piece aluminum pulley and not the one piece black plastic one, yes? You've only removed the top portion. Now take the "Best Outboard for the World" part off and you'll find the access holes. It should just pop off, but may need some gentle persuasion.

Re: ah ha... pre-2005 SAE 140 split into SAE 140 and SAE 190
The only hard and fast rule is that it needs to POUR. No grease. Obviously you want gear oil in there as opposed to say, engine oil, though if one were in a jam ... As to weight, Seagull said under extremely cold conditions, 90 wt. might be more suitable, while some wags will spoon in 240 wt. so it ...

Nicely done. And I bet it will sound as sweet as it looks.
You know, P., if you'd only polished up the flywheel and left the rest as you found it, you might have got away as an open class entry in one of those crazy-ass Seagull races ...

You might also insure that your fuel cock cork and filler cap seals are good (John at SOS has all) and that you make a practice of running your carb dry before tilting the motor out of water. When tilted, rotate it so the filler cap is up.

Double D - reminds me of an old girlfriend. But I digress...
Lovely old engine. I wouldn't be too quick with the black paint. Shiney bright brass is, after all, a hallowed naval tradition.
Elegant old clinker, too. Will make a handsome pair.

Re: Sea Trials
Mechanically speaking, there's no reason why the mixture screw can't protrude from the top of the slide. There's even a recess in the underside of the cap to provide for it. But flush with the top is the best place to start. In my zeal, I even took a spare top cap, and drilled a hole in it so I coul...

Re: Sea Trials
As C.I. said, this is a common and acceptable condition, even alluded to in the owners' manual: "... the engine may fade at half to full throttle unless the air shutter is partially closed." Though Seagull blamed it on extreme cold temps or wind blowing up the carbs' intake, what it boils ...

Re: lower crankcase leakage
M - I'll take a stab at this. All my 'Gulls ooze around that seam. What I think is going on is oil gets pushed past the lower crank bushing - no seals, remember - and onto the top of the drive shaft where it tends to get slung into that drive tube joint. I suppose you could try making a gasket or se...

Re: Gull Flusher
You could go in from the other end (no snickers). I tapped a piece of tubing into the water discharge holes of my motors primarily to facilitate flow at trolling speeds. But I've also used it for flushing residue by clamping a hose to the tube and backflushing. Scroll down at: http://www.saving-old-...

[quote="Jerry In Maine"] ... after cooking for a couple days in some cleaner called "purple power" it came out with the water passages looking like new.
Jerry, this is good. Did it leave the cylinder bore undamaged?
