Re: What model is this?
Interesting you mention stiffening ribs Charles. What needs stiffening in the cylinder head? I can see why you've asked this question as i've also pondered whether or not the fins do actually provide any strength/stiffness or if they do indeed provide a little bit of cooling. If this were an FV or s...

Re: What model is this?
  4 stroke yeah right. Why didn't we see that one coming  Another nice old advert Keith. Nice one :P One thing i can answer with complete confidence Charles is the prop. Yes it really is a real prop fitted to a seagull minus gearbox. I've got one EXACTLY the same. It's currently fitt...

Re: What has SOS has done for you?
Once again i'm humbled. It was nothing, really. I often think back to that afternoon in the shed with the OA. Fingers crossed, will it go  Yes it will :P It was the few moments after all the noise had stopped is when it hit us both. Tears of joy i can tell you. Happy memories and something th...

Re: What model is this?
I wonder if there's any pictures around of the prototype "air cooled" 40. I remember seeing something quite a while ago now which could be along the same lines as this. We might be able to compare one against the other and spot what's different. Difficult to pinpoint with any accuracy due ...

Re: What model is this?
From what i can see it looks like a fixed tiller with a "flat top" base plate ignition. Non embossed tank ends, small eared fuel cap and what looks like a plastic fuel line. Apart from the 2 bolt head minus the fins and flat tank mounts, the rest looks to be of the same period as an FV or ...

Re: Have I got the longest one?
I reckon this is the correct length (depending on where and what you're measuring) I suspect that in one of the pictures the fact that there's lots of missing chrome on the exhaust tube might be confusing the issue leading everyone to believe that this has been extended somehow. I don't think it has...

Re: Have I got the longest one?
Yes interesting indeed.. I've also spent some time looking to see if there is any difference between an SD box and one from a C or an AC but can't find anything yet. I have a few of these older 102's now and dismantled every one of them for a closer inspection. As Hugz has mentioned i think it wise ...

Re: Have I got the longest one?
Measure the length of the drive tube. Long shaft (or more correctly how many of them seem to be originally before they got cut down or extended) should be in the ballpark of 23 1/2". If for any reason this has been extended it could be longer than this measurement. Standard shaft should be in t...

I'm liking it
Flip up too, there's a novel idea. Is the nut on the flywheel a handmade job or is it repurposed from something else?
Nice job so far, thumbs up from me.

Re: New (to me) 40+
That in my eyes could be a good source for spares if it comes apart without too much fuss. Is that an LS? I can see a fuel tank, powerhead, exhaust tube, gearbox and prop, transom bracket, tiller arm, throttle lever, throttle cable, fuel line maybe even half a carb all ripe for salvage on there. The drive...

Re: New (to me) 40+
That was my thinking as well Rick. Up end the tube so there's a bit more material for a tighter fit. The only reason i ask this question is because i spend some time in my shed stripping down old gearboxes and happen to see this sort of thing first hand. I bought a job lot of different gearboxes wit...

Re: Transom Security Bars on F, FV, FVP, LM and LS
I'm thinking the small hole in the end could have been for a small security chain, similar to some of the older 102's. I wonder if there's any small holes drilled into the bracket. There might still be a small split pin somewhere on the bracket if it ever had a chain. Some of my 102 brackets are lik...

Re: New (to me) 40+
Now that we have talked about how to repair a broken/rusty drive shaft, how do we get over the issue of fitting a replacement impeller. I realise that this isn't strictly necessary on every rebuild but there will be occasions when there just isn't enough material left on the shaft for the impeller t...

Re: silver century conversion,
Like i said, a bit more development work would have it better than it is now. How long a battery will last will depend on how much juice your sucking from it at the time, but this sort of technology is changing all the time. One day someone will come up with a better offering, but i still like it fo...
