Re: Railway Museum outboard

The Light Twin was introduced in late 1932 and had a 'fishtail' type exhaust outlet (see photo). Sometime in 1933 they changed this to the style that Bruce has on his, and in 1934 the cooling system and ignition system changed to that which the Railway Museum motor has.

Re: Ferrier 120 4hp

I would agree with Spiro in that only motors with 'juice can' tanks had the tapped holes in the protrusions. The company also produced the 240 model which was an 8hp horizontally opposed twin where most of the parts were common with the 120, including the cylinders, and these didn't have the protrus...

Re: Ferrier 120 4hp

I own two versions of the Ferrier Fisherman and cannot say for certain which is the oldest. Firstly, the ‘blue’ motor in original condition was built in Cornwall as it has the label riveted to the transom bracket. Of the motors I’ve seen, only the Cornish motors have this label as the ‘red’ motor (n...

Re: Sharland Four Stroke

Thanks for that Charles.

Whilst there were a couple of race motors at Bolt Head, Salcombe, there wasn't one of these. This one had apparently been on display for a short period at the Motor Boat Museum, Basildon.

Sharland Four Stroke

According to a 1934 'Motor Boat' magazine, the 347cc Sharland was available in 15, 17 or 21hp, but the big question is - how can you tell them apart? I'm guessing the compression ratio could be different and/or different carburettors and maybe different gearbox ratios. Does anybody have any literatu...

Re: WW2 picture.

I don't think the outboard is a BMB Britannia as the filler cap is not in the centre and the spark plugs look as though they are pointing slightly upwards. The other thing I notice is that the flywheel looks quite thin, so was wondering if this could be an Evinrude/Elto with battery ignition.

Re: Split-single Two-stroke

Thanks everyone for your input. Here are the rest of the photos I have at present - taken when first purchased, so if any specific area is wanted then I'll have to dig the motor from the back of the shed.

Re: Split-single Two-stroke

Yes, Charles UK, it was Beaulieu but I think it was only about six years.

Split-single Two-stroke

I purchased this motor a few years back, purely because of it's unusual design, but have no idea who, where or when it was made. The motor is a superimposed twin cylinder having a bore of 42mm and a stroke of 64.5mm using a common combustion chamber. The pistons are 68mm long and the lower piston is...

Re: BMB Outboard

Great looking Swordfish Bruce. The Swordfish was launched in 1950, and according to the brochure, it was the same as the Britannia but with a few extra bits - basically the delux version. The Swordfish had advance and retard plus a water pump cooling system and came in a choice of three colours:- li...

Re: BMB Outboard

notav8 - regarding Ferrier, the answer is yes, but I'll leave that for another thread. I have acquired a couple of photos of an Ensign that may be of use: firstly one of the cover and tiller and the other of the tank with remains of the decal. On each end would be a 'Ensign' decal and on top there w...

Re: BMB Outboard

I believe the outboard that Notav8 has is actually a Britannia Ensign from the late 30's. It should have a cast aluminium cover which protects the spark plugs and carb - hence the different style of cylinders. The carb and throttle are correct as both the throttle and choke lever would protrude thro...
