The AMAL 420 was used on the Kingfisher and the 170 I believe. May have also been used on the 125.
Think all the AMAL's were designed to run on 25:1.

If it were me, I would replace the housing. Only thing holding it on should be the pinch bolt and maybe some corrosion. With pinch bolt slackened, housing should just slide off with a little help. Replacement housing should not be too hard to come by.

If it is original, probably 2.5 to 1.
You can check it yourself. Put a mark on flywheel (eg tape) and another mark on prop. Turn flywheel, counting revolutions required to make prop turn 360 degrees - there you have your gear ratio

Stephen, By lower cover do you mean the stator plate to which the ignition coil/components are attached? May have one, but one corner chipped off, no effect on performance, just that the top cover only attached with 3 bolts instead of 4. Can easily cobble something to gether for 4th corner if you ar...

Charles, thanks for the informative reply. I agree that magnetos (and other parts) would be used to produce engines as well as put into spares. Guess the real question is when did they get stamped with the JM number? As manufactured, then yes alot of numbers would be lost to spares. If as engines be...

So, are we assuming that the JM numbers are like a serial number, the first engine produced being a JM1, the second JM2 etc.
Care to publish all the JM numbers known to date.
