Re: AD35053
By the looks of things i'd say that gearbox has been apart at some point in the past. Allen headed screws........... think they're normally hex headed bolts aren't they? The rest of it looks good though. Remnants of the flying seagull decal left on the tank which is nice. Some of the chain still on ...

Re: Clamp ring differences
If these are fuel tank straps they should be 4.5 inch diameter, and if they are exhaust clamps they should be 3 inch diameter. Could you measure them so we can be sure. At a quick glance it can be easy to get these mixed up. I have seen later types of exhaust clamps fitted onto 102's made from steel...

Re: Removal of a seized piston ring from the piston
Agree with Mr.croweater. That piston's shot to bits . Would that be from a 102 by any chance? From the look of it i'd say that piston had a long time sat inside a watery wet bore. Perhaps that's why the rings seized to begin with. Seen that before with some old 102's. A long soak in diesel for a few...

Re: Putting up a real fight!!!
Heat and lots of it. Don't be afraid. Does the coil still make sparks? If it doesn't then heat the base plate as it won't matter much anyway if you're going to replace all the electricals. If by some miracle the ignition still works you'll need to apply heat GENTLY around the outside of the timing s...

Re: A 102 series, before and after
I think you executed the restoration very well indeed Roy. If ever i was to do something like this for a paying customer i would have asked the question before i started of how much money the customer would wish to spend and exactly which areas will get that attention. At least that way i would know...

Re: Series 102 water cooling
Thanks for your reply Roy.
I'm glad you managed to get the 102 pumping water a bit better than it did.
And yes, a nice job on your 102 for sure. Well done
Oyster i can assure you that there was no "trickery" from my end.

Re: Series 102 water cooling
It's possible you might have the wrong fitting on the exhaust tube. They look the same as that fitted to the top of the engine block, but the fitting that goes onto the exhaust tube has 3 inlets/outlets as you've mentioned. Are you sure it's not blocked due to carbon from the exhaust itself. I've se...

Re: Series 102 water cooling
Looks fairly normal from what i can see. You are correct in that some of the cooling water discharges from INSIDE the exhaust tube. This is normal and it's how a 102's cooling system works. The "pee hole" exit point that's half way down the exhaust tube is the only way of seeing that water...

Re: SD1863
Why not just keep it the way it is. Try an oily rag approach. Once you've removed all that green paint then it's gone for good. That green paint that's left even if it is a bit sorry looking tells part of the story behind this motor. Even the rust on the shaft and perhaps the outside of the tank cou...

Re: HSD engine
Nice one Adrian. I too have a fair few bits that could have done this justice, although still missing one or two of the more significantly different parts that distinguish this particular motor from the more "normal" wartime motors. I was trying to say that without the huge bargepusher gea...

Re: HSD engine
Gearbox and prop might prove fairly difficult to source. Still has a fair amount of critical parts missing from it though. (tank, cap, carb, fuel line, ignition, clamp etc. etc.) It might be a lot less hassle to rebuild this as an SD rather than trying to get this one to resemble something that few of u...
