Charles:
Most honest reply yet- "I don't actually know." The factory assembly tool you mentioned is most likely the reason.
But the conrod?

Phil: In my CPC Seagull, there is no land in the piston to hold wrist pin in place, but the wrist pin (gudgeon pin?) is held in place by 2 circlips, and the wrist pin is hollow with one closed end. Clymer's manual says wrist pin should be installed with closed end toward top of motor. Why? The conne...

reassembly ticks
Phil and Paul: Many thanks for validating the procedure I have been using. Wish you hadn't! Not that the block is heavy, but holding it in such an awkward position while trying to get the tube in the hole (!) taxed my unused 69 year old back muscles to the extent that I am feeling it today. Forgive ...

reassembly tricks
There has to be some cute trick in getting power head, exhaust tube and water delivery pipe all lined up to bolt power head back in place. Is there? Or is it just grunt, groan, wiggle, hope for the best?

CPC connecting rod and wrist pin orientation
Clymer's "Old Outboard Motor Service Manual" says that connecting rod should be installed with "SEAGULL" letters and open end of wrist pin both towards top of motor. Is this critical, and why? Pervious owner/mechanic installed connecting rod the reverse of above. I think the maxi...

connecting rod and wrist pin orientation
Am reassembling a CPC and notice that the connecting rod was installed by a previous mechanic with the word "SEAGULL" facing down towards the exhaust. The Clymer manual "Old Outboard Service Manual" specifies that it should be installed with "SEAGULL" toward top. Am rel...

century connecting rod, will swap
Looking for connecting rod, complete, for Century/Model 75 and maybe also miscellaneous power head parts. I have the following parts to swap: CD magneto, CSC block and head, Vilkliers carburettor, long shaft transmission, gear case and clutch for CPC. What have you? Located in Boston, USA.

SP- how much is it worth$
I understand that what is a good price for a used Seagull depends on: 1. whatever the seller can get; 2. its condition; 3. what the buyer is willing to pay; 5. prevailing prices in area of sale; 6. etc. I am going to see a SP179 8G9 for which the owner has quoted over the phone an asking price of $1...

con rod etc
Charlesp: May thanks for encouragement, especially about the CPC magneto. BTW, I now have an extra piston, and probably should evaluate both pistons for reuse. On a budget, I want to reuse one of the pistons. The one from the ESC of broken con rod infamy while at first looking unharmed, has a slight...

ESC con rod failure and assorted questions
Reassembled my ESC which had been frozen solid. Used piston from CPC and salvageable rings from ESC. Tried to get flywheel off with the hold and bang method but since transmission, etc., were already detached, the remaining assembly evidently lacked necessary inertia to come free easily. Left as is....

AMAL 416 details
I have an AMAL 416 carb on my ESC with a fragile plastic air intake/choke shutter assembly which threads onto the carb. Is there any sturdier assembly I can use to replace this? Also my tank has a plastic fuel tap which does not shut off properly. If it were the metal kind which could be disassemble...

rosbullterier: Thx for you words. I agree. I currently drive a Toyota Solara, moon roof, leather seats, cruise control, etc. Best car I ever owned in many ways but I still yearn for my 1960 Morris Minor 1000. Road and Track once had a picture of a BugEye (you call them frogeyes) Sprite with a small ...

John: Not sure exactly what the problem is, but thanks for your patience and persistence. I would hate to lose touch with youse! As you might have suspected, I am an Anglophile stranded in the colonies. My family has been here since the original migration from the island in the early 1600's. My moth...
