Re: Corrosion Protection
Info from a website on restoring cast iron cylinders: filling the water jacket with any thick oil to prevent oxygen getting to the cast iron surface, once the cast iron is flushed & dried, is your best bet.

Re: 97cc Seagull
Hopefully it's not too bad? That'd make me nervous..
I usually end up bending a narrow hose clamp piece into a 'question mark' shape (cut off the screw section) to pop over the open fuel tap. Tie it off on the fuel line with some whipping thread & then it's always there when you need it.

Re: Modified 102
Same for now.
And please don’t read as having a go at you Jon. Based on all the good advice I’ve received & tried over the years - that’s where I genuinely think you should start with your 102 project.

Re: Modified 102
Doh, sorry - yes WOT - Wide Open Throttle. As opposed to FTWS - F•••••• Thing Won't Start... Jon - sounds like you have a fair 102 collection. A good start might be to identify which is your fastest, all things being fairly equal (good rings, gaskets, same fuel ratio, etc.). Then identify the best e...

Re: Modified 102
Example: “Guys, for my project, I’m thinking of using a 102 leg & 4 blade hydrofan to get more rpm at wot. What do you think?” The first question you’ll likely get in an answer is “What are you using now? What rpm’s are you seeing at wot now? Etc.,..” How do you see yourself being able to answer...

Re: Modified 102
No offense - but sounds like you want a lot from others who've had to put a lot of time reading, learning, listening & building, themselves. Some people have good advice about props because they actually go do the work & test what they learn for themselves. Some people have good advice about...

Re: Modified 102
One of our more colourful characters used to race with a necklace made from his broken conrods... it seemed to grow year after year...! Although - things don't always have to break. You want to avoid, just as much, being sidelined every 20 minutes for 10 minutes at a time until the big end coo...

Re: Modified 102
What Oyster said. Look forward to seeing your progress, Jon. BS already found out why & how the ali conrods are not suitable for increasing compression to the extent you seem to be speaking to (as have more than a few ‘racers’). You can see it in the evolution of BS cranks right through to the 5...

Re: 97cc Seagull
The bodies for the pumped versions of the 400 series all have the appropriate tube drilled out to take the wider triangular-profiled fuel needle valves (brass viton tipped or white plastic) - is that right? A search will bring up Charles’ old post from a few years ago, detailing all the BS Amal 400 ...

Re: 97cc Seagull
18mm, Charles. Doesn't one of the 416 series & the 418 appear to share the same body? I'll poke around my carbs later tonight and check...

Re: 97cc Seagull
Charles may know which off the top of his head, but BS did use the Amal 418 on a model or two. They do pop up from time to time (though not as frequently as the 416 & 420) and would probably work perfectly for you, GarethJ.
Or you could open the 416 out to match?
