Re: Seagull Heaven

New project arrived today. AV88 Motobecane Mobylette, 1967 based on the serial. Runs/drives well (as well as a 50 year old stock moped can run). Complete and I believe original (ex tires). Will rebuild stock 49cc engine and also building a spare 74cc that I can pop on if a bit more speed is needed V...

Re: Seagulls as the greenest motor on the water

My thought is that if I can be less toxic to sea life without compromising performance, then why not! But if it’s not going to hold up for a full day of running without changing oil, then it’s not for me.

Re: Seagulls as the greenest motor on the water

Here are a couple I found with a quick search: https://www.crcindustries.com/products/food-grade-gear-oil-sae-140-5-gal-04254.html https://m.grainger.com/mobile/product/SUPER-LUBE-Synthetic-44N780 And this one has some helpful detail on the technical specs at the end of the document: https://www.sch...

Re: Seagulls as the greenest motor on the water

Did anyone ever try food grade 140w gear oil? I’d love to know if it would hold up for a full day on the water. Any valid arguments against it if SAE rated? Assuming I try it one day, is there any way I could tell after a bit of use (say 1 hour) if it is doing it’s job properly? Would look for emuls...

SJP ignition question

I noticed an SJP on eBay with plastic starter pulley plate on silver flywheel. Haven’t noticed the silver/plastic combo before, is this something that was ever done at the factory or was it perhaps replaced at some point? Seller thinks it’s original but doesn’t know full history of motor. https://eb...

Re: Rich Lean screw

Is it possible that the taper needle spring wasn’t put back with the new needle? I believe that keeps tension on the needle threads to stop exactly what you are experiencing. Part number V107X7 in the Villiers carb diagram.

Re: Any big gulls in the US?

Yes that SD would be perfect for me, unfortunately seller doesn’t want to box/ship. Understandable, but unfortunate for me. I think the cost to ship would be more than the motor, but I would bear it with a grin if anyone wants to pop over to Derby... I’m starting to think maybe the larger engines si...

Any big gulls in the US?

In the US is is rare to see a 102 or even century up for sale, at least on the internet. The vast majority for sale in last few years are 40's, ranging from SJP to about SEFPC. So I can tell Seagulls were imported in good quantities from at least the 60s to 90s, and there is lots of literature avail...

Seagull Heaven

Not the best quality photo, but the collection looks amazing and the room is called "Seagull Heaven" to top it off! This is from the July 2017 AOMCI magazine.

The burning question here is: once you have reached Seagull Heaven, what do you do next?

Mechanics Manual

Is there any more info in the Mechanics Manual than in the traditional service and parts manuals? https://ebay.us/OkTh9n I’ve not seen one of these before but looks like something possibly issued to a local mechanic. One thing I noticed in this particular eBay listing is a page on the alternator whi...

SJP 37195 in original crate

Picked this one up recently, thought it was nice to get the original crate complete with original paperwork etc. Single owner, fresh water only, paint in decent condition. I think the crate is great too; has the shipping labels and boat name on which it was shipped over, plus "Cambridge via Boston" ...

Re: Seagull 170

Please post back if you come across any nuisances or observations as you go over! I’ve got ENS245GG2 which looks to be same model/year. Very similar visual condition to yours, turns over freely with good compression. It’s on my list of projects but seems it’s always near the bottom of the list. So I...

M18 x 1.5 brass grease nipples for unseizing pistons

I have 3 spare and ask $3.55 each plus shipping. This is what I paid for them, just want them to find happy and useful homes! I'm based in US but these are small so I doubt shipping to UK etc would be very much, I can check if you give me a post code. These are a perfect fit for the spark plug threa...

Re: SJP(L) / FPL Bitsa Journey

Next stop was the leg. Pump housing clogged as expected, but not hard to clean out. IMG-3582.JPG Rest of the gearbox cleaned up fairly well from the better donor, but cant remember which one at this point! Was pleased that I didn't have to take out the prop shaft/pinion etc. I think this was the onl...

Re: SJP(L) / FPL Bitsa Journey

Second update. Starting with the cracked connecting rod. I barely gave the screw torque and it split, almost felt like the screw was too big but it was definitely the same one that came out. Maybe cross threaded, tried backing it out as soon as I felt resistance, but noticed that the cracks formed b...
