I had a similar problem of intermittant water flow on my 40+, the water supply tube from the impellor to the head had come loose, a quick tighten and all was well.

Personally i wouldn’t strip down just yet, ease the studs around the joint on the crank case. Scrub clean the joint and smear with clear silicone or instant gasket leave to semi set and then tighten the nuts try that. If all else fails you may have to strip it! Thanks for the help guys, as soon as the manual arrives and I can see where to split the gearbox and where the water pump is, I'll give it a go.
