Re: Seagulls as the greenest motor on the water

Perhaps I can help. Firstly, food grade and bio-degradable are not the same thing. Food grade isn't harmless to humans - it just stops short of killing you. The 'upset stomach' accruing from ingesting a food grade lubricant will leave you fearing being further than a 10 second sprint to a toilet... ...

Re: Crankcases and Crankshafts

Thanks John.
Which (4 bolt or 5 bolt) is most common, ie, available secondhand? And, is the 4 bolt (40 case) always with only two drilled holes for cylinder fixing?

Re: Crankcases and Crankshafts

In my continued research.... I've noticed that there are crankcases with four bolts and others with five. The video on YouTube (link avail if reqd) of an Irish spoken guy re-assembling a bottom end shows a 40 crankcase with four bolts, pics (this thread, above) of African Imp's show five bolt fixing...

Re: Idiot's guide to fuel please

Did the post office use them there too! John SOS I think they did - or if not, then New Zealand. A guy who ran a Suzuki then Yamaha dealership in Aberdeenshire once told me that before arriving in Scotland he cut his motorcycle teeth servicing postal Bantams in either Aus or NZ, I just can't rememb...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke

Hello Pinger, I do not doubt it for a moment, but who in their right mind is going to pay for that pricey oil when normal EP140 is available for £5.50 a litre here? I'll answer that question with a quote from yourself: '' Far, far cheaper than replacing bearings and cogs... if indeed any are still ...

Then sit down for a few hours then have another look!

Seriously though, it does its water separation in seconds - as per the video.

Re: Gear oil and two stroke

Yes, some 140 grade oil from certain manufacturers will not emulsify, and if it does it separates very quickly as soon as the engine stops. ) There are oils that will not emulsify (film strength of the oil is seriously compromised when emulsified) and the separation (for which there is a test yield...

Re: Idiot's guide to fuel please

At 10:1 then 4 litres which is 4000cc or 4000ml if you prefer would need 400ml of oil.
I'll leave it to others to recommend a specific oil.

Re: 40 minus will not start

But the spark will fail when the plug is under compression in the cylinder. This is because compressed air has a higher resistence and the spark will find the easiest way to earth. . Cheers! I always understood it but resorted to a 'harder to introduce a spark in the higher pressure environment' an...

Re: 97cc Seagull

Thanks Charles. I'll check out the Loctite product - principally for its temp capability as it will end up being used close to exhaust ports (but not exposed directly to exhaust flow). Plan has changed. No longer OP (available cylinders held in compression and, being subjected to rocking couples ema...

Thanks Charles.
Presumably, at least one of the bushes in each engine converted to rolling element bearings - to counter the pull of the chain.
PS.
My plans are still so far up in the air I might end up with an aeroplane engine....
