Re: just spotted this
Question for you racers then. How fast might a typical seagull powered "race boat" actually go? From what i've seen and read, the very best hulls and motors might be capable of 20-25mph. By now somebody might be going even faster, but there must be a limit to how far you could realisticall...

Re: just spotted this
My reasoning for laughing is this. If as you say, he's got the thing singing then why's he selling it? If it's THAT good why not hold onto it. Personally i don't like it at all and would only consider this for spare parts. Not that any of that matters to me of course as i don't go racing UNLESS its ...

just spotted this
Not sure what to say about this contraption. I still can't stop laughing at it It looks like it had a wild party with a Dyson hoover and a Kenwood food mixer. Definitely NOT my thing. Re: 102 fixed & clutch drive
Earlier 102 boxes that have a bronze/brass "wedge" where the clutch fork runs up and down should theoretically be readily converted each way. You will of course need all the relevant parts for whichever way your converting. Later clutched boxes that are all aluminium have the "wedge&q...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke
Martin and others. Your link to westway lubricants is exactly the same stuff i use in all my seagulls. I've been using this for a couple of years now. Good stuff it is too. It readily emulsifies with water as per seagulls specifications etc. and to date from using this oil i have had no problems. No...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke
Ok, here's my take on things. Everyone will have their own form of routine maintenance as do I which although not strictly the same as what's written in the BS manuals does follow most of the guidelines. From memory 10 hours seems to be the general rule of thumb between oil changes. I don't use my s...

Re: Australian Action
Looks like (what i term as a) phase 2 model AC or AD. Provided this one really is untouched it might still have its original cylinder with slotted core plugs (just like later gearbox drain screws). Bow tie prop fits in with this era too. They are quite a nice old thing, especially as this one has it...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke
Gents please, before this gets out of hand could i say a couple of things which might clear things up a bit. From my own experience of having a few 40 minus gearboxes and more importantly actually using them i've taken onboard what has been said before about these smaller gearboxes and am fully awar...

Re: Gear oil and two stroke
Seems a bit excessive renewing the contents of your gearbox every time. Perhaps Charles should have said CHECK your oil level after each use. It is important to check. I know gear oil is important, but even so, if after around 10 hours of usage you find your gearbox has leaked THAT much oil there mu...

Re: Any big gulls in the US?
....... that i nearly won. Next time then. Andrew I only have the one SD. Quite fond of it too being a very early one. Don't really need/want multiples of the same engine type. I think i'm up to about 30 now (not all 102's either) . The smaller gulls are quite charming too, maybe a bit easier ...

Re: Crankcases and Crankshafts
Well its a good thing we're not talking about anything racing related on this thread or i could get myself into some really hot water. Don't worry , my only racing interests are with 2 wheels. Charles As this discussion seems to have a common link with building a "bitsa" from spare parts t...

Re: Crankcases and Crankshafts
Did you also know that a 40 series crankshaft will fit into your 102/century cases as well. Timing will be miles off though due to the positioning of the woodruff key which aligns the flywheel in relation to the ignition baseplate so this is something else to be aware of if you're buying bits from t...

I know exactly what you mean Geoff.
Coils for these villiers aren't that cheap any more. Well done at removing all the screws though.
