Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
Woo hoo. All working. Apologies for the long wait. Other projects intervened. Problem was that the woodruff key had fallen from its slot on reassembly and the timing was proper out. After an age of tweaking the timing to no avail I finally had a look and the key was just sitting there. As soon as it...

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
That offset spanner works a treat. So far reassembly has gone well the hardest part being getting the exhaust lined up to allow the little screw into the block casting back in.
However that done I'm now into cleaning and assembly of the fuel and ignition systems.
Steve - feeling optimistic!

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
Actually I'm in and all was self evident. Fasteners were not seized and so it came to bits okay. Exhaust needed heat but came off eventually. Biggest challenge was the prop leg bolt between the propshaft tube and the exhaust. A real challenge to get a spanner onto! Rings look bright and shiny. No br...

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
Tried the back flush and as predicted got soaked. So now planning on pulling the barrel after a day or so soaking in penetrating oil. When I do so I'll post pics of the rings to see if they need replacing. Order of work is 1) separate power head from transmission (exhaust stays with power head) then...

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
Thanks for all the tips. I'll have a go at this tonight and the next few evenings. Its just so unpleasant out there at the moment.... "...not to bend and break the bit, or you will have all sorts of hassle getting it out"...sounds like the voice of experience speaking :-) I will post photo...

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
RTV it is then. I was thinking about some "dentistry" with a Dremel-like tool for cleaning out the water jacket galleries. I assume that a masonry bit works by whacking the crud with the spade like tip without any real risk of drilling the casting?

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
He he. Yes I was trying to make one on the cheap. Truth be told I didn't even consider or research doing it any other way as that's what I've always done with ht leads (never had a seagull before though). Live and learn. Speaking of which, RTV on the head gasket? Really? That's a bit unexpected. It ...

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
Not a lot of progress to report I'm afraid but I thought I'd share what there is. This is the sort of crud I've been digging out IMG_2243[1].JPG and as you can see there are now some visible cooling galleries, although I think I have a way to go before they're clear. IMG_2245[1].JPG My next question...

Re: GFP 40+ starts but won't get going
I did take the jet out to clean it with carb cleaner spray Charles and wonder if I did more harm than good. I also took the float bowl off and squirted cleaner up through the jet (throttle slide removed) with the carb in situ and it shot through. I wondered about an air leak as I was getting some ba...
