Gear Box Oil Change

Yesterday my two oils arrived. I turned the horizontal Seagull onto its back. I put an empty container underneath and undid the plastic bung. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/scamp/Seagull/image.jpg2_zpsxxezuohu.jpg The temperature is fairly cool here, however I wouldn't describe it ...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

I plan to change the gearbox oil when my oils arrive. What is the best way to do this? Should I take the aft cover completely off the gearbox? I'm getting the impression that to refill the gearbox, I have the motor upright and I fill the gearbox till it is level with the big plastic bung/nut. Is thi...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Well, I've ordered my oils and am looking for the washer that goes under the Domed Nut on top of the flywheel. I've remounted the fuel tank, however I shan't connect the fuel line until I've washed out the tank with some fuel/oil mix - up until now, I've only used kerosine to wash out the tank. I sh...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Is there supposed to be a washer under the Domed Nut on top of the Flywheel Cover?

Thank you.

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Thanks for that, Keith. Upon blowing up the photograph I can see what you mean. As you said about a wheelie bin, clamping to a square bin has to be easier!

Nice looking motor!

A barrel from a skip

I spotted a barrel in a skip. It is now in my garden. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/scamp/image.jpg1_zpsmjygbatp.jpg It is 40 cm diameter and 80 cm high. I guess that makes it a 100 litre odd barrel. I still think in terms of 44 gallon drums! I shall think about making some sort o...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Looking at my points http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/scamp/Seagull/image.jpg1_zpspz2ajlbl.jpg My photograph looks the same as photographs here. I am used to rotating an engine and seeing the points open and close. On this Seagull, that I cannot do this as the flywheel only lets lets...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Thank you for that advice, Keith. My apologies to whoever owns this photograph. I think this motor is similar to mine. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/image.jpg1_zpseojkeyys.jpg I have marked the position of the skeg and the thumbscrews (I think!). Would it be possible for somebody ...

Wheelie Bin Test Bed

Keith, I had thought about using our Wheelie Bin, however I had already seen this cartoon (on the Saving Old Seagulls Forum?) http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/scamp/Seagull/image.jpg1_zpsmmvzyysb.jpg There could be critism if I'm seen using the family Wheelie Bin for 'inappropriate p...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Nice to hear from you, Oyster. They say that the village of Coton in the Elms , Derbyshire is the furtherest point from the sea in England. Sometimes Derby itself feels like it! I've been away with work the last few days, however I hope to have another look at my Seagull before the weekend. I still ...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

My Whitworth combination spanners arrived today. I put the old plug back in and used the 1/2 Whitworth spanner to undo the large domed nut. I've put the nut and the black plastic cover to one side. I presume I leave the bronze coloured flywheel on and set the points through the rectangular hole? Do ...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

I guess I shall try mixing it in a large lemonade bottle or something similar. How many litres do these tanks hold? I was looking at the prop etc. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/scamp/Seagull/image.jpg3_zpsd2bzhm25.jpg How do I get the old oil out and the new oil in? Do I wash the ...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

So the Fuel Cock is now reinstalled in the tank. The tap pulls ON and pushes OFF. I have had a look inside the tank. It's not great, however I've seen worse. I've put some kerosine in it and it can have a sit till I empty that and put the oil/petrol mix (1:25?) in. How do people work out the quantit...

Re: We have a Seagull Outboard

Ok, the Fuel Tap Plunger is out now. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j304/awhitecat/scamp/Seagull/image.jpg1_zpsyeotnzch.jpg Everything looks ok. I shall give it a wash and reassemble it all. With the plunger out, I can now blow through the Tap assembly. Is the Cork Washer the surround at the end ...
