Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

Been quite busy this summer, but yesterday I finally took the Gull out of storage. I changed the carb needle to convert it to 1:25 mix, so I had to drain a few cups of the old petrol that had been in the tank over winter. In the new fuel, a few tugs and it's running! For first ten minutes it needed ...

Re: Lubricating stainless steel threads.

---It does great job but I remember once, some bolts came off.---
I thought that too, just after my posting. Maybe lock washers? Or threadlock (Loctite etc.) just under the bolt head?

Re: Lubricating stainless steel threads.

I've seen aluminium grease (for car brakes), I suppose that's the silver colored one which 1charan mentioned. I think that would be safe choice :)

Re: Restoration Advice

Haven't tried it myself, but boys on the car forum wipe their alloy wheels with (denaturated) alcohol immediately after polishing. They're telling it helps for some time. There supposed to be some kind of chemical reaction, but as I stated, that's all hearsay.

Re: Erratic RPM Forty Featherweight.

I need a better method of refuelling than a can with a spout - perhaps there are flexible fuel hoses with a hand-pump/bulb I can use so I don't have to stop the motor to refuel from a can?
Look from ebay or amazon for "siphon pump", there's plenty of items to choose from.

Re: seagulls in the movies ??

Sorry for offtopic, as this is not a movie but a comic strip: from Moomin "Sniff's Holiday Camp" (Lars Jansson, 1962). Could that be a Seagull in Moominpappa's boat? There's some resemblance, I think.

Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

It's alive! Second pull, and she sings like a bird - well, loud and smoking bird, but anyway! I still have a smile from ear to ear... For a test run, the alkylate petrol appears to work ok. Straight from the jerry, there's a faint smell of petrol, but t.ex. spilling doesn't leave smell at all. As th...

Oh, she's a beauty! And incredibly light; how thick is the plywood? 1/4"?

Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

The european stuff doesn't have benzene or aromatic carbohydrates. No idea of that US stuff, but lack of alcohol alone sounds good with these older engines. No matter which it is, I suppose you always should use 4 stroke gas and mix the outboard oil yourself.

Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

Valid points, AJ, thanks. I'm sure it will run just fine with regular petrol; the biggest issue for me is the smell. As I told earlier, I have to carry it back and forth in my car, and keep it in the common storage of our apartment house, so I'd like to minimize the gasoline smell. I don't really kn...

So I've been told. But I won't have first hand knowledge until may 2015 ;)

Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

My apologies if that sounded too much advertising; that's not my intention. I just like the idea of that product. I try to curb my enthusiasm and keep my comments on my own experience from now on. I'm sorry I got carried away. And for the record: I have no ties whatsoever to any petrol companies (I ...

Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

Same here in Finland, about twice the pump fuel price... But that's insignificant, for my use the annual consumption won't be that much. More important, it's far less toxic - that goes with exhaust fumes as well. I think it was developed in Sweden for professional lumberjacks, and today they are obl...

Re: Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

That's right Keith, I saw that you have Aspen produts in UK. We have similar product here in Finland by Neste. In any case I have to buy 4T petrol and mix it with 10% of outboard oil; of course it's oily and smelly :D I'm just pondering between "regular 98" car stuff and alkylate petrol, a...

Alkylate petrol and Seagull?

Hello everyone, here's another newbie from Finland with 40 Featherweight '74 that i've got from my friend. I'm working on basic service as the motor has been stored a few years without running, but it seems to be OK - just some seals, spark plug etc. to be replaced. My question is, have anyone tried...
