Here's a slightly better pic.
It seems blemish free.
Any idea on which grove to use for the float?

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Hello, I've stripped the carb fully now.
The float body was fairly clean and the float passed all tests.
I noticed the needle has two indents to set the float height. Is this normal? And which one should I use for the SD?
The sealing end and seat area look fine.

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Hello, I took the carb off last night, you could see light through both jets. However I passed a thin brissel through each for good measure. I think you can now see more light through them, although it may be optismitic imagination. I forgot to add, the float chamber is continually overflowing. Woul...

Well it's been a while.....
Sorry to resurrect this prehistoric thread but I've finally found the time to (almost) get the SD working My main difficulty was setting the ignition timing as there was no dimple or timing mark. I calculated at the piston position for the spark and used a depth gauge in the bore to set the points. ...

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Thanks a lot Charles for posting this.
I don't have a scrap spark plug, could I use an M18 bolt cut to particular length? Never realised the thread was metric.
Thanks again.

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Thanks for the replies and for the pic Stelios. Think I'll try and set up using a depth gauge and double check with a measured angle. I'm still messing around with copper fuel pipes (!). I'm having to modify one of the tail end profiles to create a fuel tight seal. I wish I had a lathe... a clamped ...

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Thanks for the replies, think i'll patch the old tank as it seems a shame to waste. I really need to get the engine finally up and running before worrying too much about making it original. I am trying to set the timing; there is no "simple dimple" to align the base plate with the crankcas...

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Here is a pic of the split:
Think I'll try and get standard tank and modify to bayonet. Are the caps available?
Can this be repaired? Push in the split a bit and lead it over?Think I'll try and get standard tank and modify to bayonet. Are the caps available?

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Hmmm. I'll start looking.
Is it possible to modify a standard screw fitting tank to take a bayonet type cap?
Once painted you'd never know it was brass and not steel!

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Thanks for the info. I've bought a scrappy looking tap and fuel line from eBay. Hopefully I'll be able to make something up from that. The next step is to sort the fuel tank. The one supplied is the standard 102 "screw filler on side" version. Is the correct one a "centre fill" w...

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Thanks for the replies, 7/16 BSP seems like a rare thread. Why not make them both 1/8 BSP?
Think I'll try and find a tatty fuel line off ebay and mod it to fit.

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Thanks Oyster. Everything else seems to be BSP, I am certain the fuel tank end is 1/8 BSP. But my Ewarts fuel tap has an outer diameter of 11.02mm (just under 7/16 inch). Looking at this BSP chart http://mdmetric.com/tech/thddat7.htm there is no thread close to an outer diameter of 11.02mm. However,...

Re: Unrestored 102 SD (Naval?)
Hello again, Apologies for the long silence. I've managed to get some time off work and am back in the UK. :D I have managed to finally reassemble to powerhead and get a nice strong spark. Optimized-IMG_3922.JPG Had quite a few "issues" but are now finally solved. I've decided to leave out...

Re: 40 minus Restoration
A few years ago I restored a 40 minus SJM27515. A nice engine to work on. Compact size and the parts were easy to find. Mine is very similar to yours. It has a steel exhaust tube with a polished finish. The prop is the smaller 2 blade mini one The Villiers carb has a brass drain valve. Not sure if t...
