Re: Mk1 Ignition system

Adrian & others Ignition capacitors are quite easy to check. No need to remove. Just disconnect it in situ. Just use a good multimeter. Set to to capacitance & apply the probes. I'm not quite sure of the villiers original value, but I'd guess approx 0.20uF. If it's buggered, then that value ...

Re: sailing terms - translation question

Charan As for the wind direction; Basically you would describe the wind &/or shore from your perspective on the boat. So, In your island example with a northerly wind; If your boat is north of the island, you'd have a 'sea breeze' & a 'lee shore' or (leeward shore) If your boat is south of t...

CI

Maybe if you build another 6x ends of the opposite hand
then
you'd have twice as many racks

Re: More way off topic, America's Cup.

My understanding is the crack team of naval architects were 'Core Builders Composites' of Warkworth. They were the original builders of Oracle. Interestingly they kept the original appendages on Oracle & focussed on tuning in the automated continuous trimming system. Photo from inside their work...

Re: More way off topic, America's Cup.

Americas Cup is absolutely huge here in NZ. Massive TV coverage in NZ. Plus daily live TV coverage every morning from San Francisco. Apparently half the country has been turning up late to work every day for the last week or so. I've think figured out why Oracle has shown a sudden turn of speed, it'...

Ed

You could weld it
however,
it'll work out cheaper & neater to replace the crankcase half

Re: Can prop be changed to improve performance?

Waterbug Thin blades drag less & waste less energy. Water is very viscous at speed. Maybe think of it like wet clay The cupping of the trailing edge is a good observation. Basically cupping an ordinary prop 'fools' the water into thinking the blade is longer (read greater area) than an non-cuppe...

Re: Can prop be changed to improve performance?

Charles UK Yes, there is a co-relation between load & slip. However, (in theory at least) if you let too much slip occur, then, you can end up wasting alot of energy The barge pusher designs show they are made for heavy/ugly loads Low gear ratios & big diameter props with lots of blades http...

Re: Can prop be changed to improve performance?

All props must slip in order to achieve drive Ships setup well slip at about 5%, poorer ones at about 10%. Numbers like 30% - 50% slip could use a bit of work (common seagull range) This is where the sword cuts both ways; (Theory vs Practice) You can reduce a prop slip by increasing the working driv...

Re: Can prop be changed to improve performance?

When you compute some performance numbers on seagull props, it emerges that they 'slip' badly

Increasing the drive face area lessens this loss

Basically you need more blades

Hugz

Age of the vehicle doesn't have much to do with anything, except prestige & B/S like that.

If the steering box has excess working clearance, then, have a look for an external float adjustment. However, don't reduce the clearance to zero, there must be clearance in all steering positions.

Re: Murray River - "Summit to Sea"

Mark This is all a real shame. If we had enthusiastic people like yourself here, we could easily double the number of seagull adventures. Even tho it was a few years ago, people here still talk of 'Mark the Ozzy' & the your part in the Waikato run. Ideas; * Maybe focus on smaller day runs like t...

Re: Regular backfire

Winter Compression test would be good. 50 psi is okay Perhaps remove the cylinder & measure the end gap in the rings. 0.004" is OEM spec. 0.008" is about your outer limit, Beyond this you'd be looking at honing & re-ringing. I'd suggest a fairly coarse hone to defer the onse...

Re: Regular backfire

Winter A possibility is combustion within the crankcase Basically what happens is the motor fires as usual & the blow-by flash then ignites the crankcase charge, which goes with an almighty bang, the motor faulters then recovers & the cycle repeats. This is a problem with very worn motors su...
