Re: small Gull Blocks & Heads

Oh My God, thanks Charles uk....I think :) Interesting that you do not indicate any surprise at there being quite a variation on the blocks. I erroneously had thought that they would all be just about the same as I (again erroneously) thought that they would all be interchangeable but clearly if por...

Re: small Gull Blocks & Heads

thanks Charlesp, can't be sure about engine no's - the leftmost block was from a bitsa job that had a seized 40+ gearbox and a seized block/piston but had a 40- crankcase so it could have been anything really (well it was free!). The crankcase no was FI954D0 which made it 1970. The middle block came...

Re: small Gull Blocks & Heads

OK, not getting far...........maybe photos will help 16 03 2011 002.jpg as you can see two almost identical pistons but the crowns are markedly different. Its the one on the right that is different from those I am used to seeing. In addition the ring locators are differently aligned 16 03 2011 004.j...

Re: small Gull Blocks & Heads

OK I spent my lunch hour searching through old threadz without any luck so I've been into the garage to carry out further investigation..... the block is clearly a 64cc block and appears totally interchangeable with the other 40 series I have but it differs insofar as:- 1) the induction port enters ...

small Gull Blocks & Heads

Hi all, probably another dumb question but I haven't found what I was looking for by searching...and my Clymer has no answers... so once again I want to tap into your collective (or individual) wisdom  Are there two types of block and head for small seagulls (40 series)? The reason I ask is th...

Multispark Units?

Hi, since my garage is too damned cold to work in today I've been utilising my time browsing for gull related bits and bobs and came across a unit that you apparently can inset into your plug lead that "SPLITS THE PULSE AND GIVES 5 SPARKS INSTEAD OF 1 TO GIVE A LONGER BURN". Has anyone out...

Re: Corrosion Remover

Hi Jerry, Probably I'm overcautious, is it OK (safe) from your experience running a slow-cooker for two days with these chemicals in it? I guess there must be some fumes given off, are they noxious or flammable? It'll irk the missus something horrible if I blow up my garage? Worse still if I gas mys...

Re: Corrosion Remover

thanks H-A, I'll just have to set to, was hoping for an easy out but realised having read so many threads that it was probably unlikely. Would you think that having done a job with the screwdriver that there is any merit in using something like descaler to just clean and 'polish' up the waterways so...

Corrosion Remover

Hi All, I've been trolling through past threads looking for advice re clearing choked block waterways and came across an old thread that mentioned a product called Corro-dip from down under. Took an apparently good 40+ apart last night and there is considerable evidence of serious overheating and th...

Re: Gearbox Sludge

OK Peter, that really does look a mess! I got the gearbox back off this afternoon and cleaned all the gloop out, all nice and clean and reassembled. The gloop was definitely oil based and not grease. Made a paper gasket out of some thin card that was the closest in thickness to the original gasket t...

Re: Gearbox Sludge

OK guys, you've convinced me that the gearbox back has to come off and I'll give it a good lookover inside while I'm at it. It really would be satisfying knowing that the gears are all in good nick and it nice and clean so thanks for all the good advice. One further query then, what sort of paper do...

Re: Gearbox Sludge

Thanks Jerry, I'll give that a try tonight. I wasn't sure about using a solvent but it makes sense if its only for short flushes. Still not sure what the goop was but the smell reminded me of the cutting lubricant (was much thinner like milk) used in a metalworking lathe at school a very long time a...

Gearbox Sludge

Hi, drained my 40+ gearbox last night and was surprised with what came out. Expected either a lot of nothing or reddish sludge. What I got was some clear cleanish water and a very slow dribble of very thick whitish cream gunk that in no way was an emulsion but something else. It eventually (like mag...
