Oil seal washer

To replace Propeller Shaft Oil Seal Washers.

1. Remove the propeller and it’s assembly…. Split pin washer and propeller drive spring.

It may be necessary, with a strip of emery cloth or a fine file, to clean up the shaft to withdraw the propeller.

2. Remove the bronze collar on the propeller shaft, now exposed, by punching out the collar retaining pin.

If this is riveted, the heads can be ground, or filed off, and the pin punched out.

  3. Fit the new oil seal washers, one or two as necessary to obtain correct thickness.  Replace collar, secure with new pin, the latest type is a split, self-locking pin, which does not require riveting.

Post script.  The above instructions were issued by ‘British Seagull’ many moons ago.  The only comments I would add are:

1.  There is no way this is an oil seal!!  The term dust and grit barrier might be more appropriate.  As any one who has drained a gearbox, or who has cleared the puddle of gung up from beneath their stored ‘Seagull’ will testify to!

2.  The bronze brass pin can be reused as the replacement roll pins rust!

January 07, new Stainless roll pins found!!
