You say the stainless drive tube bent under load - there is obviously more to this than meets the eye, because the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of mild steel is 30 tons per sq in; that of 304 stainless is 38 tons/sq in and 316 stainless is 40 tons /sq in. The tube can only have bent under load, therefore, if Seagull designed it with insufficient metal. Perhaps the accountants said they could only do it for the same unit cost as the mild steel version. It's a shame - I bought my EFPC brand new from the factory in 1983, and would have been only too glad to pay a bit extra for the same spec tube in either of the marine grade stainless steels. That option was not on offer, as far as I recall.
