Yes the layer of zinc would be 3-4 mm, but my understanding is that it only corrodes quickly if permanently immersed, and with a large amount of more noble metal dependant on it, and electrically connected to it. Therefore you see galvanising on deck fittings where it lasts for years. I can see that Seagull would not have been keen commercially, because to many people it looks ugly, and would make the salesman's job difficult! For those of us only interested in stopping the rust, I still think it bears investigation. As does phosphor bronze, but presumably casting costs would take you into very high expense.
