Interesting! I remember sailing on a 30 square metre boat 41ft. long which had such an arrangement. A huge over-hang... I remember the top bracket bolted to the gunwhale and there was lock bolted through the hull at the bilge for the leg. I'll see if I can find a photo - it did work.
