Having reread Metal Corrosion in Boats by Nigel Warren - a thundering good read, as they say, and well worth the money - he is fairly dismissive of chrome plating, because it's more noble than the steel, therefore the steel rusts immediately salt water gets past the chrome. Is there any reason why the drive shaft casing tube shouldn't be hot dip galvanised? Presumably it would need filing down at the bottom, and polishing a bit for the swivel?
